Wow jwharper, I really like your choice of coin ... and knowing me, I would already have purchased the one that you're considering ... but after gazing-through the coins from Doucet's link, I must agree with DVC and Doucet => there are a few far nicer examples up for grabs from those other dealers ...

... man, it's a bit like a recovering drunk wandering into his favorite bar and then merely "watching" all of his ol' buddies enjoying their beers! (NOTE => but I still haven't bought a coin since I purchased good ol' Claudius)

... but again, I think those coins are very cool!

Thanks for the help and information. What with all the postings of Greek coins, I have an itch to own one. But I will bide my time until I find the right one and not jump in without consulting you guys.

What was the meaning/symbolism of that checkered design on the reverse?

if you search a bit you will find a nice one with good detail for a nice price. 75-100 even less if your patient.
For example, I bought this one off Denant for $36.

I haven't found an explanation, but perhaps it's simply a design to accomodate the various minting symbols? Here's an interesting page on these coins.

Nice--it has most of the lion, and the lizard is interesting!

Just a thought. It would seem that all the references to lions on Greek coins and in mythology that there must have been lions in Greece at some time. As far as I know, there are none there today, so what happened to them?

Doucet, you found just the right link!
With the prevalence of lions in crests across Europe,I wondered the same thing.
Either they were native at one time, and used as sport until their extinction, or they were imported for that purpose.

Maybe the Christians found a way to beat them.

I was researching Chersonesos and this link came up and after reading it I couldn't help but proffer the (obvious) reply.
