Interested to see the changes and excited to get one in hand.
My question is, from a listing and cataloging standpoint, what are we calling these new coins?
2012 Maple Leaf Loonie?
2012 Maple Leaf Toonie?

No Logos, the date is where those would typically be.
I guesstimate the older version loonie and toonie were minted until beginning of April, anyone's guess on the mintage, probably low.

Hey, they are quite nice => the edge lettering is definitely a cool addition (I'm assuming that the edge-lettering merely says "CANADA" ... or is there also a mint-mark, or additional letters of some sort?)

It says "Canada 2 Dollar" and 2 small maple leaf images.
On some of the coins the rim on the obverse shows denting where the edging letters are stamped.

This should add a whole new dimension to grading and preserving, seeing that we now have edge lettering. How do I hold my coins now?!?! Hopefully it also adds a new awareness to preserving coins to collectors and hopefully we see some edge errors!

Since they have now introduced these new coins with nice security features are they going to withdraw the old loonies and toonies in the not too distant future ?

You bet. Part of the alloy recovery program the mint has.

Yes. My old-style 2012 loonie is an endangered species (and as far as I know, the only circulated example anywhere...).
It is also getting much harder to find coins from the 20th century in any denomination. I'm sad, but it's good that our government is taking steps to save money where it can.

I only have the old ones in the circulation sets. The price rose (on J&M) from $35 a roll to $140 a roll. The demand is perhaps too high.

In the latest CNN Trends that focuses on Modern Coins, 2012 old-style toonies range in value from $5-$50 (MS60-MS65) but there's a little â†' arrow beside each value. I don't recall ever seeing that before; I assume it means the price is rising rapidly.
