IGC and ANACS are the ones who have really dropped the ball on this one not having the website cert feature up and running yet.

Online cert lookup is really just lipstick on a pig considering many of the newer counterfeit slabs also clone genuine cert numbers as well.

Yep, all one needs to do is copy the cert number of a genuine example of a coin and put it in the fake slab along with the fake coin. When you look it up in the system it appears genuine since the coin in the fake slab is a copy of the one in the real slab

I was going to say fake slabs usually have legit cert #'s.

I like the way that NGC has front and back IMAGES (for the most part, some exceptions) of the coin to compare to on their S/N Certification look-up.

"The idea that ebay is exposed to substantial risk in a transaction is a misconception. In the event of a fraudulent transaction ebay refunds the money to the buyer.....by deducting it from the sellers account."

Which is something that ebay has to take the time to do and if that happens to much people shy away from buying there. Is the risk as much as it would have been paying it themselves no, but they arent risk free

ANACS, America's oldest TPG responds to ebay's decision to put them out of business:

Quote:
Our Response to ebay's April 17 Announcement:
To our valued customers:

Many of you have contacted us about the email sent out by ebay regarding changes in their coin listing policies that specifically impact sellers of ANACS graded coins. We want to assure that you that we are absolutely confident that this issue will be addressed by the May 30 deadline that ebay has established. We would also like to take this opportunity to address some of the specific questions that have been raised, and to share with you what we are working on, which we believe will ultimately be of benefit to you.

· In its email to sellers of coins, ebay mentions "certain objective standards" that are required of coin grading companies. We were not made aware of these standards until April 17th -- the very same day that ebay chose to notify its sellers of the change. Now that we have been able to review these standards, it is our contention that we exceed every standard that has been set, with the exception of what we consider to be a single technicality.

· Of the six standards that we have seen, we feel it is important to stress that we exceed any standards set with regard to the expertise of our graders or the quality of our service.

· Of the technicality mentioned earlier: ebay is requiring grading companies to "enable online verification of unique serial numbers." There are two things we would like to make clear: 1) ANACS does offer verification of unique serial numbers, but has not made that service available online as of yet, and 2) ANACS is, in fact, in the final stages of making serial number verification available on our web platform.

ANACS appreciates that ebay is taking steps to protect the coin community from the actions of unscrupulous sellers and questionable grading practices. It has been our company's mission to protect the integrity of our hobby for forty years! As stated earlier, we have no doubt that this issue will be addressed in such a way that you will not be affected by this policy change, and we are hopeful that we can work with ebay to do even more to protect both buyers and sellers of coins.
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely --

Paul DeFelice
Vice President of Customer Relations and Marketing

Anacs has mentioned that after complying with some things, they may qualify with ngc and pcgs

Just read ICG's statement. It's pretty much forcing ANACS and ICG to develop online cert verification but the way ebay did it was not very smart IMO.
It could have been handled much more professionally, and on ANACS and ICG, they should have had these capabilities long ago.
BTW, if I saw correctly, ICG uses 2 graders?

It looks like IGC and ANACS are back on the approved list. I don't know the details.

When ebay started out - it was a great, people oriented company that WOULD have handled things professionally and properly.

But anyone who has using ebay from the start will recognize that when ebay started selling stock, the company attitude towards the average joe using the system tanked while the focus shifted more towards profit. ebay WAS fun and people really enjoyed their experience whether selling or buying. Now people using it have legit gripes against it.

Being able to list items for a quarter and allowing many more freedoms on the site was what made ebay so well liked and used. It became a powerhouse when this was the mindset behind it. But bureaucracy ALWAYS kills a system.

It *appears* ebay simply wanted ANACs etc. to conform, and the easiest way was to play a bully. Back when being an American was primary in the thoughts of her citizens, things like this were looked down upon. Now people simply ignore it. ebay will not suffer for any actions such as this and they know it. I do not know this was their intention - but it seems to fit. And businesses used to put a great deal more emphasis on public perception also.

The only way I can ever see things like this being stopped is by the American system of competition in business. But until that happens, we are stuck with what we have.

I dont really see how you can say it was bullying considering the changes hadnt even gone into effect yet and they have already complied and no change was ever implemented. Its very reasonable for a company to set terms of doing business with them and if they truly were bullying they wouldnt have given them a comply by date or the chance to rectify the situation.

How long would anacs and icg go without offering online cert verification if ebay hadn't done this?

ebay forced them into doing something that should have been done years ago, I applaud them for this!

I still believe they just handled the situation poorly. They made it seem like they only wanted ngc and pcgs.

You could get that impression, but they didnt seem to have any problem accepting them once they complied.

Anti-PCGS sentiment seemed to drive the impression as much if not more than anything ebay did.

But I agree 100% that Anacs and ICG should have already had that feature anyway
