Hello,
What is the best free and accurate on-line resource having photos and related verbiage one can access to determine if a shield is an error or variety?
Also, if this site does not have current suggested retail prices, please suggest an additional URL containing this financial information.
thanks, mdpmedia

Gday All, a new member here from New Zealand. I was going through some coins I had put up for a $1 start on our local auction site and noticed the Shield nickel was a little different to others I had seen. I note that it appears to have some sort of die crack between the wortds United and States, also there is a line on the last 2 in 1882, could it be another number under the 2? Had a look at the 82/83 overdates but couldn't see the line on any of those. The pix are a bit rough but the best I could get for the moment. Any comments would be appreciated... cheers, Ian

I noticed that the 1867 in the second post actually has a complete die break on the lower east quadrant. The crack proceeds heavily through the left edge of the upper leaf.

Hi all been a while but finally picked up another of my fave cherrys .. most would have just ignored this grubby little coin but a shield freak like me would get excited especially when it was only $10 I have looked it up and I am pointing to Flecher F-04 in what seems to be a early ish die state (left arrow not to thin yet and die gouge is just visible under x10 although this is a famous ML RPD it has been one which I have had trouble finding so happy as a pig in muck with it

Well, I think I have found the right place to post this: The coin on the left I just purchased this passed Sunday. The coin on the right was my father's. (From circulation or in a poker game? He NEVER bought a coin." Close up: Any feedback on condition or price paid [$20] welcome. It spoke to me from the dealer's case. I only wanted a decent type coin and this will serve me well.

This is such a great thread that I "bumped" it for some of the newer members, as well as us "older" members.

Here is one I picked up at the local shop a few days ago. When I see nice examples, I always pick them up. The pics are horrible, I know.

Got this at the same time as the other. I don't check varieties. Not an expert on these, just like them and buy them when I can.

All these are really nice looking! I have yet to buy any of this type, but it is on my want list for the future.

I'll play by posting one of my old nickels I sold off years ago. The best looking Shield nickle I've ever owned. If it looks familiar, it's because it was in the classic grading forum earlier this year. For those of you that haven't seen it... It was purchased raw and graded MS66 by NGC! It was a fun grading exhibit coin due to the die polish and how close it looks to be a proof, those are not scratches, and yes it was almost a cameo in appearance.

Totally stupendous coin and photo West.
This type of graded shot (66 grade) is also great to have available for comparative purposes going forward since many members, including myself, are often gun-shy when designating any coin a 66 or higher.
Many times when grading coins using only photos shown over the Internet the results are subject to distracting factors like incorrect lighting, glare, computer screen settings etc. all of which can often produce inconsistent results...
Thanks for sharing.

Quote: Thanks for sharing. You're welcome! As I mentioned this was one cool coin, I first thought it may have been a proof. Wish it had been a proof, as that would've netted me $50K in profit, I did quite well on this piece even so, as I purchased it for around MS64 money. Made a nice little profit on selling it.

I received this from my grandfather back in the late 1960s. The D in UNITED, first S in STATES, and R in AMERICA are open at the top. Is this a variety? How would it grade?
