Hi all ..

what a buzz tonight I have been searching for a particular coin for the last year+ and one finally turned up on a auction site .. and you know the score 10 day listing and little "trout tickling" bids and you are waiting for the big fish to find it and start nibbling away at it and I go beyond your pocket.. then you cry and take the huff for a couple of days .. then start looking again..

Well not tonight it was sitting at a silly bid of £12.60 ($19.64) (shrug) for 4 Shields yes £3.15 ($4.91) each

so the adrenalin started to flow with one minute to go and you know what it is like not waiting till the last second to get out bid on this one (with an mega large bid).. leave enough time to get a second bid on it if I have to..

well no need ! I thing the USA term is Slam dunked, hit a home run .. its out the ball park.......... GGGGGGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL !!

so what was the final price ? £19.88 ($30.99) or £4.97 ($7.74) per coin

thanks for listing to my buzzing rant .. would you like to see the coin/coins or to followers of my posts like to guess what it was ?

Seems like I have picked up a 72 Doubled Annulet today .. seems like an age since I found one at an affordable price..Not the largest of the type .. but still not a bad find if it is one

Morning all .. left a token bid on this coin last night as it was for sale on a no Uk site and with 335 views thought no chance .. got up and found I had won it :) not a mega rarity but not a bad coin for the price

it is the reverse of 68 which is a bit less common than the reverse 67 on 1868 shields and has at least 2 broken letters C & S of CENTS (type 2.95) and possibly S in States (type 2.96) . I am hopeing that it is only a weak bar in States as I do not have a transitional of these two types in the collection

And what a Die crack/ Retained Cud on the Obverse

And thanks for bumping it. I really like the Shield nickel series. And at the handful of antique auction houses selling coins around me I seem to be the only one. So I get to pick them up cheap, grabbed a VF+ 1866 for $5 a couple weeks ago. And I probably could have gotten it for $2 but I started the bidding at $5 and no one else bid.

There are some very nice coins in this thread though, makes me want to start working on this collection in earnest.

Hello,

What is the best free and accurate on-line resource having photos and related verbiage one can access to determine if a shield is an error or variety?

Also, if this site does not have current suggested retail prices, please suggest an additional URL containing this financial information.

thanks,

Gday All, a new member here from New Zealand.
I was going through some coins I had put up for a $1 start on our local auction site and noticed the Shield nickel was a little different to others I had seen. I note that it appears to have some sort of die crack between the wortds United and States, also there is a line on the last 2 in 1882, could it be another number under the 2? Had a look at the 82/83 overdates but couldn't see the line on any of those. The pix are a bit rough but the best I could get for the moment. Any comments would be appreciated...
cheers, Ian

I noticed that the 1867 in the second post actually has a complete die break on the lower east quadrant. The crack proceeds heavily through the left edge of the upper leaf.

Hi all been a while but finally picked up another of my fave cherrys .. most would have just ignored this grubby little coin but a shield freak like me would get excited especially when it was only $10

I have looked it up and I am pointing to Flecher F-04 in what seems to be a early ish die state (left arrow not to thin yet and die gouge is just visible under x10

although this is a famous ML RPD it has been one which I have had trouble finding so happy as a pig in muck with it

Well, I think I have found the right place to post this:

The coin on the left I just purchased this passed Sunday.
The coin on the right was my father's.
(From circulation or in a poker game? He NEVER bought a coin."

Any feedback on condition or price paid [$20] welcome.
It spoke to me from the dealer's case.
I only wanted a decent type coin and this will serve me well.

This is such a great thread that I "bumped" it for some of the newer members, as well as us "older" members.

Here is one I picked up at the local shop a few days ago. When I see nice examples, I always pick them up. The pics are horrible, I know.
