I ask for halves or any other kinbd of funny money. I think that pretty much gives them the idea.

Ive brought the actual coins in on occaision, but a note might be good with some tellers and bad with others. Most of the ones I work woth can recognize what morgans etc are, but sadly also know their value and take them. And about that "fenale president coin", I daydream about that!

I can not stress enough going when the bank is very slow. It is really boring working in a bank because they don't have internet access on those computers and the muzak sucks. When it's busy I get dirty looks and eye rolls pestering them with dump bags and asking goofball questions. When I'm the only customer in there, everybody comes over to gawk at the curious fellow who actually wants those silly old grimy coins.

@SilverEye: I couldn't agree more. Going at noon while everyone on their lunch break is trying to get back to work is not a good time. I am lucky that I can take an early lunch break from work to run to the bank (they always are really slow between 11-11:30 AM it seems), or I can hold off and do my coin stuff at the same time I run my work's bank deposit, which is around 1:30 and also seems to be a slow time for the bank.

Anymore luck with this lately? I'm going to give this a try sometime. I'll let you know how it works out for me.

@Williamson: Not recently to getting an unique coin. But I have seen success in breaking the ice with tellers. I seem to get less strange looks then then I forget to grab the sheet (horrible at remember the sheet as I am horrible to ask for rolls). It kind of tips them off that I am a coin collector instead of having to give a long speech.
Let us know how it works!

I'd be real nervous about the whole note thing....
I have found most tellers to be woefully uninformed about the change in the drawers. Plenty don't know what Ikes and SBAs are. I don't try to confuse them or aggravate them with multiple coin type requests: they're not there for that.
I do ask them for ANY half dollars and ANY dollar coins besides the golden dollars and I often take the, too. I pay my kinds for their chores with dollar and half dollar coins and spend the rest aside form any finds.

Haha, I may have to get one of those shirts to wear every time I go out, the fiance may not like it though lol. It may help me save time in the future.
I went on my first hunt for halves today. Had to go to three banks and a grocery store to find just three rolls (all the spare cash I could put together). The first two banks didn't have any but were super nice and actually checked all the drawers for me without even asking them to.
The grocery store had just sent all their change to the bank but the manager told me to try on Wednesdays because that's when they start putting the change together for the deposit and that would be the best time to check. I thought that was extremely helpful and nice of him to do.
The last bank I went to actually had more halves than I could buy and they were so dead when I came in that the teller let me exchange for them even though I don't have an account with them. She was really nice but seemed nervous about it so I probably won't go back there unless I open an account first, but it was very kind of her to help me out.
After all that running around I only wound up finding one NIFC Kennedy and it wasn't even in very good shape lol. Now I have to figure out either where to dump these or spend them and wait until I have some more cash to try again.
