Hold on, I don't think the second is a WAM. Look at the position of the initials on the two coins.

52Raymo - LOL.

CaptainFwiffo - Thanks for your observations too. The a & m do seem farther apart on the 98 than the 00 here and the FG is closer to the steps on the 98 than on the 00. Would they be identical if they were both wide AMs, even though they are different years?

Hey CaptainFwiffo, I think you be right the AM on the '98 looks close and the FG is a bit further than the 2000. This one is a toughy. But the first one is !

Second one is a Close AM which is a normal coin. The M shuld be centered to be a Wide AM. Your isn't located centered.

Really, REALLY easy way to tell...forget the initials, I'll give you a way to tell EASILY with the naked eye. No loupe needed...

Wide AM - the TAT of STATES is evenly spaced.
Close AM - the TAT of STATES has the A off-center to the right.

First coin is Wide AM.
Second coin is Close AM.

Thank you for the tip CC. I have only found 2 WAM's here in Canada so far. One 98 and a 2K. You can usually see the spread without a loupe between the A & M but the positioning of the TAT in STATES will make it much easier to identify on the dirty coins.

Learn something new every day.

To those who thanked me for the tip - you're welcome. I've posted it here before, but you know how that goes. Once a post makes it to the second page, it rarely ever comes up again.

Anyhow, this discovery was a matter of recognizing the fact that the two designs are just that - two completely different designs. If they changed the font on the A and M causing them to be closer together, then they had to have made changes to the remainder of the font around the coin. I found a few minor differences but the spacing of STATES was by far the most obvious of all the changes made besides the spacing of the A and M. Just think - if the part about the A and M wasn't the first part discovered about the differences, we could easily be calling these "lop-sided STATES" and "evenly spaced STATES" cents. Of course they could also have easily been called the "close initials" and "far initials" cents.

Interesting. going by that clue I'd have called them both WAM's. While by looking to see if the M is centered between the A and E, I see that the 98 is clearly a WAM and the 2000 is a CAM.
