I know from experience with my son that YNs typically get great deals from sellers who want to encourage the proliferation of the hobby.

It is not it is like that without a parent with you, as donkrx and I told about.

Well, I am unusual then. In another (at the risk of not sounding humble) hobby I am pretty well known. And if someone young comes to my table at shows, whether they have an adult with them or not, I make it a point to cut any price on what they ask about and also make sure they walk away with some freebies (and not just "junk"). Most of the big time dealers I rub elbows with do the same as a matter of habit in encouraging young collectors.

So I know youth can benefit without parents being at their side. I do not doubt there are times where you have experienced what you say also. But the term "only" is an inaccurate absolute. Myself included, we all tend to see/remember the red lights rather than the green.

No matter how hard we want to get rid of it, stereotyping will always be with us. Swallowing that bitter pill and learning how to work around it can be a challenge. Only by reigning in our natural desire to feel offended will people ever learn to be able to cope with these situations and then turn them for the better for all involved.

Note I said in another hobby - glass insulators. I don't know if I will ever be a coin dealer although I would like to. So if you are at insulator show and I am there - we can have some fun!

I forgot to proof read as I was a bit rushed. Supposed to read; "Most of the time this is true if with a parent, but if alone this is very, very rare."

Well get interested in glass insualtors and I can help you see a brighter side of life

In fact, the owners of the main insulator publication actually offer some freebies (you flat rate pay postage) for anyone under 18 (I think its 18). Just like the threads on CCF where people donated to a boy scout pack meeting and a young collector named Zack had a lot of things donated to him by people on this forum.

But yes, it can be rough out there at times when growing up - had some experience with that myself at one time

I also used to be a teacher of high schoolers - best years of my life with people your age.

My parents can hardly handle me doing the hobbies I have done for years... They (and my budget now that I am thinking about it) couldn't handle me picking up a new hobby... It took 4 years and the Olympics coming to Canada for them to think about coin buying for hobby purposes, not as an investment (my dad still can't but he likes 'Spartan' style living.. I.e. living with almost nothing).

Another note; I don't mind dealers keeping the price the same, but a dealer raised the price when I went without an adult and lowered it when my father came (I didn't buy anything from that dealer)

Hindsight is 20/20, too bad you didn't say "if your a gambling man, I'll bet you $_____ that I have more cash on me then the next person that walks in", and check his expression...

Yes, I remember the days when my parents were asking me not to bring so many things home also! I think it is all part of growing up.

I actually have been using the profits I can make in the the other hobby to help me get some of the coins I want. Unlike coins, there are fewer collectors of insulators (but enough to make it a good hobby). Some good stuff can still be found in the wild (especially in Canada); in antique stores, flea markets, garage sales, etc.. And I do not know one collector in the insulator hobby who has not found at least a multi-hundred dollar piece within a couple years of becoming knowledgeable about them.

How I have used this to my advantage is that recently one piece - that I originally traded 4 pieces for - that I originally had traded up for from some pieces I had collected in the wild - and was able to afford an AU 32D and UNC 32S quarter b/c of it - something two coins I had wanted since being a kid!

I also find it funny that a lot of my friends in the insulator hobby are also coin collectors. I guess they go hand in hand b/c of the historical aspect.

And one more thing - keeping in line with this thread...

One of my friends collects both (more glass than coins though); is located near London Ont.; started when just getting into high school (college grad now); and has found quite a few better ($1k and more) pieces! Its a lot of (fun for him) work as he probes/digs for them a lot, but he also frequents antique stores etc. where he has gotten some great buys also.

BTW, I am not trying to convince you into my other hobby, but am using it as an example of how I use two hobbies to my advantage so they pay for one another. As it sits, I literally have not invested any money into either collection of mine - they are totally self supporting!

I think Cherry Picking and ebay (shudders at the overwhelming greedy mindset) might be a way to get ahead in the coin hobby. But it takes being serious, time, and commitment. The best part is - these three characteristics are what makes a hobby fun.

I'm 15 and I buy $100 coins all the way up to a couple grand every weekend for myself and my dad. I've never been questioned, only been asked "Where did you get the money" and I politely replied with "Selling coins". And thay's the truth, I make most of my money selling coins.

Must be some parts of the country,

wow I'm amazed this is still going this was a while ago, well I kinda put half the money in jm bars and half in the bank, college aint cheap these days. I have learned from that incident, and try to present myself where I wont scare the dealer that I'm about to mug him. however the reason I didnt think about the diesel and oil on me is I live in the country and everyone about works labor jobs and its not uncommon to smell the fumes in stores like Walmart, even the golden corral. although the dealer keeps his left hand under the counter when I'm talking to him, I guess trust is built over a while I guess is you dress rough your treated rough.

@1inamillion

We kinda changed the topic from the starting story to other stories of it being easier and/ or harder for young numismatists period.

Like how a dealer raised the price on an object when I was alone and dropped it when my father came.

Are these all coins for your collection, or your dads collection? If you can afford to buy coins for "a couple grand" every weekend, I need to start selling more coins.
