I have rolls of BU ones from mint sets that I haven't been able to sell off on ebay. I did sell one roll for $12 but that's hardly a money making margin. |

They were minted for two years, so there's tons and tons of them out there. I suppose you could keep the very nicest ones, but I don't think they're going to be a key date or anything. I think high grade 1982 and 1983 would be the ones to watch out for because there were no mint sets that year. |

I used to just get rid of these halves as I didn't see snything worthwhile in them at all. I wouldn't even give them a look - just ditched them as soon as I got them without another look. Without the past few weeks I happened to find an "S" minted coin. As I was trying to fill up an album of Kennedy's I looked at it as a clad coin and went to fill in a slot in the album (as I knew it was vacant) and happened to see that not only was there 90% proof but 40% also. As it happened it turned out to be a 40% business strike.
You can rest assured that I won't be ditching them to fast without checking their mintmark in the future. So some are worthwhile keeping, but you probably have to look high and far to find the ones that are worth keeping.

And even likely still for your childrens children and beyond. Use your energy and storage capacity for " other" directions with your coin searching. If those were to be placed in a time capsule, hidden somewhere to be found in about 5,000 years, whoever finds them could well be rich IF in that time coins would still be worth whatever is used.  |

Ha ha, not even sure if they'd be worth more than face value 5000 years from now. Ok, well if they are worth more than face value by then, they surely wouldn't have kept up with the inflation rate!!

If they are circulated, I would spend them. BU might be worth saving, but they won't go up much, in the next few decades.

I would let the circulated ones go back into the wild. I have one of each (Silver Proof) Bicentennials; two bits, four bits and the dollar in my 7070.

i used to save all of them when I was a kid I had 100s of bicentennial halves and ikes now I only have proof and silver ones |

I think you should always keep your eye out for the Kennedy's. It's always seemed to me that some underinformed person is out there dumping them back into a bank after finding grandpa's stash, including proofs, 40%ers, etc, even for the bicentennials.

I used to get rolls of those halves at banks all the time. For a while I started to think that the 71's and the Bicentennials were the only ones ever minted. Lots and lots of them in every roll. Possibly the bank does that on purpose to irritate roll collectors. |
