I gotta check my sets, I have seem a few of my sets of different years started to slightly tone, but I think storage condition and the environment has to do with it.

My 2009 set doesn't look any different than the day I received it.

fyi... US Mint did warn us in 2009 that the 95% copper cents would tone tend to tone faster. I remember reading this somewhere back in 2009

I really have no idea. Every year I get Proof Sets from the Mint. I put them in a box next to the ones from the year before and are never to be seen again. I've been doing this since the 50's and have never looked at them once they go into that box.

So Carl, did you check your 1970 sets for small date?

A couple of my UK proof sets are toning. I rather like the way they're toning, so I don't really mind it. None of my U.S. proof sets show any signs of toning, though I almost wish they did because I do find toning patterns neat to observe.
It's probably a combination of local atmospheric conditions where you have your coins stored and possibly a less than perfect seal on the holder. It's not a horrible thing to happen, though.

Just wondering, has anyone seen any toning of the silver dimes and half dollars in the proof sets from 2009 yet. Is the toning noticed just on the pennies?
{edit} Is the toning of the pennies also noticed in those that are slabbed or just government proof sets?

I did a little double checking today. On both 2009 Proof sets all coins show toning, strongest on the cents. My 2009 Silver Proof set shows some minor toning on one of the cents. The 2009 Mint set looks just fine. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to store these sets away from the rest.

While you all are checking your 2009 proof sets, don't forget to double check the 2009 Northern Mariana Islands silver quarter for the major die error that looks like a reflection line across "STATES OF".

This looks like something similar to another member shown with his proof coin. I think Mike Diamond wrote a section in Coin World. Nice find!

Only thing that disappointed me was that the Pres dollars have red streaks on them. I boughr a second tray though, so i'll just switch it out.

I examined all of my 2009 proof coins (2 clad proof sets, 2 silver proof sets, 1 Presidential dollar Proof set) and found toning only in one of the four cent lenses. The toning is very mild but if it continues, I think that it will not look very good. All of the coins are in their original lenses and one of the 2009 silver quarter packs (the one with the NMI error quarter) has been opened numerous times as I examined, scanned, photographed, and finally sent the NIM coin to PCGS. They have been stored in a large mint blue box (the four lens kind they no longer sell) or in my safe (the silver). The mint boxes with the copper & nickel coins is kept in my nightstand which is lined with cedar and I know from experience that a raw coin left out in that environment tones rapidly (in a matter of weeks or months) and usually with brown tones that are not particularly attractive. I suspect the cents that have started to tone were not fully cleaned prior to leaving the mint and that the toning is mostly due to chemical residues left on the coin surfaces. I never understood why the mint tried to treat the copper cents to prevent unattractive toning when the cents in my proof sets from as far back as 1957 are all still brilliant red (and I assume that they were not treated in any way). I think that in trying to solve a problem that did not exist, they actually created the very thing they were trying to prevent. Bottom line: 4 of my 72 2009 proof coins (5.6%) have at least some toning and it is not attractive. The other 68 (94.4%) are as they were when first received.
