I sent this coin to NGC for grading using a new NGC Membership grading coupon. The grade it received was vf30, I believe it should be more. A few points raises the price a lot. Would you chance sending it to PCGS in hopes of a higher grade? I believe the coin has to be all it can be. I just let my NGC membership expire and bought the PCGS membership. I wonder if the new membership earlybird gradings are looked upon as less than the coin should be, what are your thoughts? Ed

i dunno even the gallop poll in the thread split it into a VF range i think, unless the lighting was bad, the appeal of the surface bought it down a bit it looks a bit wiped at some point in these pics and I think you might go 35 with PCGS but you could also details grade which would kill it
if its worth at least what you paid its a long term commodity investment right now and its in a very reputable slab which is a plus
the die clash is tremendous as indian said sweet coin

VF-30 is a fair grade and you will risk getting a details grade.

Did NGC attribute it as a CSA coin? I would let it remain in the NGC holder I have heard that PCGS is tougher on coins.

XF.40 and the value would be around 130 dollars.

"XF.40 and the value would be around 130 dollars."
If it truly NGC-30 WITH the designation CSA then the value is 5-6x that amount.

It does have the CSA obverse die crack, and I did include the variety grade with the order. They just shipped it and it should be here maybe tomorrow. I'll post a pic of the encapsulated coin. It's a great coin and I would not want to take a chance getting it downgraded. I sent another 1861-O with the CSA obverse die crack with the same order, they gave it a grade of F12. I thought for sure they would call a cleaning on it. Two great coins that I cherry picked off ebay and I just found another one. The VF-30, I paid $142 for. Three fantastic finds. I'm old and retired and love to cherry-pick, Ed

So your saying this coin is worth close to 800 dollars, that coin would have to be mint state to do do that and it ain't even close, and a slab wont make it worth any more. If it is a NGC-30 then it's worth around 70 dollars.

Quote: that coin would have to be mint state to do do that and it ain't even close, and a slab wont make it worth any more. I don't think you are understanding exactly what this coin is, it is most certainly not your average 1861-O. This coin was struck with the same obverse die that was used to strike the Confederate States of America Half Dollar. Only about 1/3 of the 1861-O mintage was struck under Federal authority, the rest were struck by Louisiana after succession and then the CSA government. Unfortunately, most of the non-Federal issues are difficult to attribute to the CSA but the WB-102 is probably the single most popular variety that can be definitively attributed to the CSA. A slab with proper attribution will indeed add hundreds of dollars to the value of this coin.

biokemist6 I do see what your saying I simply missed the crack on the obv of the coin and yes that makes a bit of difference and one I missed valued around 200 to 400 Dollars.

1861-O CSA obverse F-12 auctioned for $690 and same coin EF-45 went for $3,400 on ebay a few months ago. Ef-30 auctioned for $2600. So another point would make a difference but I'm satisfied, I'm not going to chance it. The F-12 I bought for under $50 and the EF-30 for $142, I was just lucky with the cherry picking

I just looked at the PCGS F-12 that went for $925, WOW, no bidders just a straight "buy it now" it was a very nice looking coin. Like I said I'll post mine when I receive them, Ed
