Hi LaxMum,

I am also in Hamilton, as are a few other respected coin collectors. Please feel free to drop me a line privately and I will put you in touch with a collector whose has offered to help you out. He doesn't post on this forum and you have elected not to receive email replies or he would have contacted you directly.

You are also welcome to contact me directly by email and I can try to help as well.

What ever you do, it is my opinion that you should not take them to the coin shops in the city, at least not until you know what you have.

I agree with Steve about not doing anything until you know what you have.

Once you have them sorted, do as SPP suggests and buy a Charlton guide (you can get at Chapters / Indigo). At least this will give you a rough idea on value and you can make an informed decison on the path forward.

I know Steve personally, and he is connected to a number of collectors who might be interested in various denominations (e.g., a large cent collector from Burlington, a token expert in Perth, etc...).

Selling to collectors is always better than selling to a dealer.

LAXMum, I was reminded that the email system here is restricted for users with less than 50 posts.

I set up a temporary email address you can use to reach me, ccfSteveInCanada@gmail.com and I will pass along some names and emails of people who can likely help you out.

To moderators: I did review the rules and didn't see anything about posting an email address ... if it's a violation, my apologies just remove the post.

To be honest the best way to sell it is on ebay. When you sell on ebay you get retail value if you sell to a dealer you get wholesale value. People tend to overspend on ebay above retail. I'm one of them on occasion. Also if you have a ipod or a iphone you can download the app for ebay. It will give you the ability to see which particular items sold and for what price which is a valuable tool. With ebay there are tax implications that should be noted and evaluated.

Don't be in a hurry and don't try to do it all in one go, I also quite agree with the previous post that you should handle them carefully and not try to clean them!

I would seperate them into batches of coins that are alike and then approach them a few at a time. If you scan some and post I am sure people would be happy to tell you a bit about them.

You have the internet at your desposal and there are many sources of information so if you are patient you should be able to squeeze the most of of this situation.

I look forwards with interest to see what you have :)

Thank you everyone.

I am going to explore a couple of options as suggested, but am definitely going to post some pictures. I have been spending time the last couple of months trying to sort everything into the "same" category (from what I can tell. To those of you who know your stuff (and I greatly admire your expertise), this might not be the most logical method - but I am trying my best to get the most exposure as possible.

Pictures will be forthcoming, within the week.

Grouping them together into similar categories will be very helpful in determining what you have.

Handle them with care, since condition/grade matters a lot. Like handle the coins on the edge, so you don't put fingerprints on the obverse/reverse.

Hi LAXMum, both Bill and I have tried to contact you at your email address and the mail is bouncing (the return message says your mailbox is full).

I recognize your server, if you're uncertain how to resolve this you should give them a quick call, they'll be able to help you out right away.
