Among the featured coins is a Germany 1874B Oldenburg 10 Mark graded NGC MS 64 (lot 732), with a starting price of €10,000 (about $12,000). This gold coin from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was struck at the Berlin Mint and features Grand Duke Peter II on the obverse and the Oldenburg coat of arms on the reverse. It was issued during the early years of the German Empire.
Grand Duke Peter II ruled the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg from 1853 until he died in 1900, overseeing the small northwestern German state. A member of the House of Holstein-Gottorp, Peter II maintained Oldenburg's autonomy while the German states moved toward greater unification under Prussian leadership. Oldenburg ultimately became part of the German Empire in 1871, though it retained its own government and issued coinage under its own name.
Only six examples of this coin are recorded in the NGC Census, and only one is graded higher.
