Ok, just took inventory of gun safe. Besides the guns, there are a couple boxes of ammunition, a selica gel pak, and the one thing that is suspicious - although it is in a glass jar - powder solvent. The word 'solvent' sounds bad. What do you think?

Think I should leave the safe door open to air it out?

Gotta be the solvent. Thats gotta be bad for the guns and the coins. Id give the guns a wipedown too while your at it. Some of those are very nasty stuff. I usually use clp myself comes in nice bottles that are easy to store away from everything. Keep that stuff in the garage though especially if its in a jar no way thats sealed airtight

And yea leaving it open for a little bit and letting that stuff air out may not be a bad idea. Depending how bad it is the whole safe may need a wipedown

Feeling pretty crummy. Let's see, who can I blame so it won't be my fault? The solvent was put in there by my son. Yeah, it's all his fault.
Nope, didn't make me feel better.

On the bright side aside from having to replace the slabs the damage shouldnt be anything that cant be fixed with a wipedown. Also at least you caught it now before it ate away at the coins too. Could always be worse so while not the greatest news there is a bright side

It is DEFINITELY the powder solvent. The change in the plastic slabs is exactly what powder solvent will do, either in direct contact or vapor form. Get the solvent and the ammo of the current storage container.

Personally, I would send the slabs back to the TPG that originally graded them, as is. Attach a note, advising of the situation, and ask them to call you prior to proceeding.

well that is very unlucky that this happened but that must of been some very very powerful chemical to cause the slab to break apart like it did:( hope everything works out for you

You could air it out yes and safely use white vinegar for the wipe down...or just water.

Are those gold coins? What kind of coins had the slabs ruined?

Definately some sort of solvent releasing organic vapor which recondensed on the plastic. Looks like acetone damage.
