If you store the spare ammunition in the same safe ( I have one with a separate lock up section for ammo )I would be removing it and storing it separate.
The powder in the cartridges is pretty nasty stuff if you have cracked shells or loose projectiles there is a real chance of the powder gassing out.
This may be the culprit of these damaged slabs

I looked in the safe again (while holding my breath) ha. There is a leather holster in there. Could tanning chemicals be a factor?

BTW, I have 3 handguns & ammo, stored in a safe with no slabbed coins. The raw coins show no ill signs at all...hmmm.

Well, vermontensium, you'll notice that the gold coins seem to show no affects, just the plastic.

Coin id keep them in the slabs. Theyll get there fast enough and theres just as much risk breaking them out that they could get hurt. If theyre broken out they could downgrade as well. But IF a slab is just about to starting eating at a coin then break that one out and dont touch the coin itself except the sides.

Whats in the gun safe outta curiosity? Any cleaners or lubes? Just trying to think what could have done that and if it did that to that may be eating at the guns too if you havent checked them

Ok, just took inventory of gun safe. Besides the guns, there are a couple boxes of ammunition, a selica gel pak, and the one thing that is suspicious - although it is in a glass jar - powder solvent. The word 'solvent' sounds bad. What do you think?

Think I should leave the safe door open to air it out?

Gotta be the solvent. Thats gotta be bad for the guns and the coins. Id give the guns a wipedown too while your at it. Some of those are very nasty stuff. I usually use clp myself comes in nice bottles that are easy to store away from everything. Keep that stuff in the garage though especially if its in a jar no way thats sealed airtight

And yea leaving it open for a little bit and letting that stuff air out may not be a bad idea. Depending how bad it is the whole safe may need a wipedown

Feeling pretty crummy. Let's see, who can I blame so it won't be my fault? The solvent was put in there by my son. Yeah, it's all his fault.
Nope, didn't make me feel better.
