On the bright side aside from having to replace the slabs the damage shouldnt be anything that cant be fixed with a wipedown. Also at least you caught it now before it ate away at the coins too. Could always be worse so while not the greatest news there is a bright side

It is DEFINITELY the powder solvent. The change in the plastic slabs is exactly what powder solvent will do, either in direct contact or vapor form. Get the solvent and the ammo of the current storage container.

Personally, I would send the slabs back to the TPG that originally graded them, as is. Attach a note, advising of the situation, and ask them to call you prior to proceeding.

well that is very unlucky that this happened but that must of been some very very powerful chemical to cause the slab to break apart like it did:( hope everything works out for you

You could air it out yes and safely use white vinegar for the wipe down...or just water.

Are those gold coins? What kind of coins had the slabs ruined?

Definately some sort of solvent releasing organic vapor which recondensed on the plastic. Looks like acetone damage.
