SPP

Yeah I chuckled when I saw him describe it as unique . I have several different dated ones .

I don't ever recall a severe misalignment on any of the 78-81 cents . They are the most popular years for errors though .

SPP.....I don't disagree that those years are chalked full of error types however I am still not convinced that the 2007 misaligned cent isn't quite rare. To me it doesn't really matter that there are a lot of errors in a particular year.....what matters to me is the rarity of the error type, regardless of date. I still want to see someone post a misaligned die that far off, or even close to that one.

Does anyone know if there is a way to report a bidder? The guy who was leading this auction for 4 days straight at $202.50 just retracted his $250 bid claiming that he "entered wrong amount". Knowing that the next highest bid was $200, he decided to re-enter a bid amount of $199 (unless this is something that ebay does).

I'm not concerned about the $2.50. There are nearly 30 watchers on this auction, and a lot of people have reached out to me about buying this off of ebay for more. However, it shouldn't take someone 4 days to realize that they entered the wrong amount, and if I was the guy who had bid $200, I would now feel like shill bidding was taking place (since he's been forced to his max bid through a retraction).

Any advice?

Hi jg

Yes, you can always report a bidder if you think they're doing something wrong, the unfortunate part is you can't always prove nefarious doings on the part of said bidder, and then it just becomes a pointing finger match. As someone who's been part of nearly 3000 transactions on ebay (the majority of which I was the seller) I have found that there are bidders out there who will do just about anything screwy, and in the end most of the time you just have to suck it up and carry on. It's easy when you are buying from someone who seems to have a shill working for them -- I'm not talking about you, I actually have a certain dealer in mind whom I won't mention because I can't actually prove it -- because you can merely stop buying from them. But when you're the one selling and you have someone who pulls out it's a little tougher. If it becomes a habit or they don't pay for what they win you can block their attempts to buy any more of your stuff so their bids won't register, but that's really all you can do. And who knows? It's possible that this buyer had a valid reason for pulling out. I have no idea who he is, but his wife's shrill silver tones ringing out "We can't pay the mortgage and you're buying WHAT?" comes humorously to mind!

I'd say that if this is the only time this happens, don't worry about it. Keep an eye, though, if he bids on anything else you've got and see how he does. He might be all right in the future and this could be a one-shot deal.

As far as the other buyers thinking you do have a shill working for you, you could always email them and assure them that you don't. Communication is always the best idea. Just don't say anything against that $202.50 bidder, because you really don't know why he pulled out. Keep it all professional; your customers will always respect that, and therefore respect you as a dealer. And in the end, I suspect your coin will end up going for quite a bit more than the $200.50, and the whole point will become moot.

Hope this helps!

pennysaver - thanks for the response. I messaged the bidder and asked him why he did what he did, and he said that he lost his job this week. Despite being against policy (as I understand it), that's a fair enough reason, if true.

I'll leave it at that. Like I said, based on communications I've received, I don't think his bid was going to be the final one, and even if it was, I'm not going to sweat $2.50. I just felt like it compromised the auction a little bit.

No problem, jg. Good stuff on emailing the bidder, because it looks like he wasn't just messing around with you. His explanation sounds reasonable, so I'd take him at his word and leave it at that.

And good luck with the auction -- those last few minutes should be interesting!

the off centre rabbit last week broke 500.00. This one, half that seems reasonable? But if a few people feel it is worth more .....then the pocket book will reflect the final outcome. With more collectors after modern cents, it could just get silly. Good luck with it tho. I will stick to my error tastes.

This coin cost me more than anticipated, hopefully, it is as nice in hand.

Nicklesguy, I think your last comment is comparing apples to oranges. The subject 2007 cent is a misaligned die, not an off center strike. Big difference is rarity and price. This coin has absolutely nothing to do with an off center strike such as the rabbit you referenced. This coin was struck inside the collar versus your rabbit that was struck off center and not in the collar. Unless I am not understanding what you are trying to say.
