i give my kids 10 each week in dollar coins as an allowance. last summer I was out visiting my Parents in the Napa Valley and stopped at a small local bank downtown to get the kids their allowance. The teller asked me if I wanted the large or small dollar coins. I told her I would take the Ikes and she told me that they had a bunch they have had forever and would I be interested in taking them off her hands? Long story short...I purchased a 500 count bag of Ikes at face...of course..this is a bank! The good news? One Peace dollar and two silver Ikes. So yeah, they are still out there. On the other hand I have a small business selling coins and am always offered collections, and they almost always have anywhere from a dozen to a couple of hundred Ikes in them. So as umpopular as they are people are hoarding them.

In my experience, the bog standard Eisenhowers (as opposed to the 40% silver or proof versions) tend to sell for around $1.25-1.50 apiece. That's not a huge premium, but it's better than anything you'll get for SBAs or the "golden" dollars.

Maybe in another 10-20 years the SBAs will also get a small premium after being out of circulation for so long. Once again, though,. don't expect too much.

I pay my kids allowance in Ikes, SBAs, Golden dollars, whatever's on hand. Kennedy half's, too, a favorite with my daughter.

I haven't picked up any "new" ones, but these were inherited. Not bad to look at. Mostly bicentennial Ikes and 1979 SBA.

They made some 1.5 billion Ikes and it's hard to believe that with enough for every American to have about five of them that they are all in "circulation". Of course, hundreds of millions have been lost in fire and flood since the '80's. There are no reports of any being melted so one is left to suppose most of these (800 million) are probably in storage.

I've seen speculation that there are still BU bags in storage but this is less likely.

SBA's are mostly mixed in with the newer dollars.

I sell Ikes and go through 10s of 1,000s of them. Mutilated coin is not sold.

They supposedly pay $19.84/$20.00. Plus I had to pay for the shipping. This is my first batch...we shall see what happens!

If you want 40% silver proof Ikes, a bunch just hit the market.
They are the U.S. Mint Bicentennial 3 coin proof set.
1976-s 40% Silver Proofs Ike dollar, Kennedy half, Washington quarter. All gem proofs at mintproducts.com for $22 today only. Or take your chance on ebay.

$22 is a bit of a mark up if you ask me. I bought one set for $19 last year and silver was higher then.

I have quite a few SBA's I get them from time to time from a change machine at work that dispenses dollar coins. Occaisionally I drop a 5 or a 10 $ bill and see what I get
