ps I think that is the new business plan to keep CP propped up.

When asked how they can make money exchanging $1 for $1, the post office said:

VOLUME!

On a serious note, I'd be surprised if CP is distributing these coins without compensation but the real benefit is traffic.

I went there to get the new coin but I also looked at other coins they had and would have bought some if they had any of the coins that are sold out at the Mint. Beyond that, I added to the customer totals that day which is used to support keeping CP in business. (i.e. providing a public service despite being unprofitable)

I went to two local post offices and both said they haven't gotten any. One said they get their change from Brinks and not the Mint, and the ladies there said they had no idea about the coins. Am I the only one who's encountered this problem?

I have four post offices in my general area, one didn't get them. Check link on first page for locations.
Second post office had limit of 5 coins from paper roll.
Third had 40 rolls yesterday and they were selling by the roll all in plastic wrap or coin exchange.
Fourth place had about 5 or 6 rolls all paper, sold rolls or coin exchange.

It is suppose to be a 5 coin limit, but I think some locations don't realize or just don't care

I picked up a roll today no questions asked. They were paper rolls. I opened one roll and all the coins have dings and scratches. Bright and shiny but beat al to hell. On a positive note, the post office had some uncirculated sets for half price.

The faster they get rid of these coins the sooner their cashiers can deal with real customers making real money.

Actually I think its a smart move by the Mint. In this scenario they sent to only 4000 locations,
whereas shipping X number of PL 5 packs to X number of customers with free shipping was probably cutting into profits.
Not to mention wages for filling orders...

This has also provided a more fair means to distribute the coins, that is if it was kept to the 5 coin limit.
Now you'll probably see 100+ people trying to sell the coins on ebay for $5+

My local 7-eleven is also a community post office - I just called there, and they have abou $600 worth of rolls, and would be glad to sell me a roll or two. I agree with *coin_games - probably a large saving for the mint then sending out 5 to each request. This way also, they get full Canadian exposure, quickly.

That assumes that CP is distributing these coins without compensation - possible but unlikely. The mint only gains here if the cost to ship to customers plus packaging/labour etc is less than the cost to ship to CP PLUS the discount given to CP for the coins (or any other fee they are paid). Overall, this might be more profitable but without the details it's impossible to say.

CP received the coins from the mint - not as a currency shipment from a bank - and they are not using them as cash for customer transactions. The PO I went to were not promoting the exchange in anyway, and I actually had to explain the exchange before the manager finally realized what I was asking for and went in the back room to get a roll - no one else had asked about them before me. Since many of the POs seem to be selling rolls rather than limiting to 5, it's possible that even fewer people will get these coins because only those who actively collect coins will go looking for them (and can get more than 15 as they would with previous exchanges through the mint.ca).

Either way, I doubt this becomes much of a collector item. Poor quality strikes and oh-hum theme.

But this all brings up an interesting idea. If this is a cheaper distribution method, then why would the RCM continue to sell anything directly to the public? Why not shut down the mint.ca ordering and force us all to buy through Canada Post? (to the RCM lurker: if you are reading this, please don't think that dog will hunt)

I just got back from getting a roll as well. When I asked for $30 (1 roll + 5 loose) I was told she couldn't. She didn't know how to take them out of inventory - except in rolls. So yeah, they consider them 'inventory'. However all the advertising I've seen mentions "limit of 5 per customer" and they don't come 5 - to a roll. :)

When I bought some the money wasn't put into the cash register.
I don't see the mint.ca shutting down, but for circulation coins it would be the cheaper route.
Plus it'll bring attention to the NCLT coins the PO's have.

In my PO adventures I uncovered one place that has many sold out coins, eg. Calgary, Titanic, & 1812 Proof, etc...

Just picked up a roll from the post office today. It was plastic-wrapped. Doesn't look as desirable as the paper-wrapped version if you know what I mean.
