If I remember correctly, it is because of our earlier harvests! However, as a descendant of the Pilgrims, I celebrate both.... Also, I just moved away from Calgary... It is way too cold (-40... Apparently they have snow already!  ) |

Ah, I see, makes sense, as does celebrating both, any excuse for a party  It got down to -25 the last time I was in Cochrane, cold enough for me, being from the UK -40 is almost incomprehensible to me, I'll give thanks for that  |

It's not an excuse.. It's a 392 Year old tradition to celebrate Thanksgiving... And it's been as long as I know that we've been celebrating both! I wish I could move back to the UK... I did for 1 week this summer.. And then we were told we were moving back  ... Atleast we saw the Olympics! I'm looking at doing a foreign exchange semester in University... In the UK of course! => Life in The Great White North Yeah, snowball fights, having fun in the snow... that must suck  Just kidding, even though I'm in SE Florida I can imagine how annoying winter must be up there at times. Here in winter it averages around 60s-70s Farenheit in the day (around 16-20s Celsius), with lows in the 30s (around 0-4 Celsius), usually at night. Still too cold for me at times though! It's kinda funny/ironic, because at -15 celsius the snow is so cold and dry that you can't make a snowball => it is merely like a handful of suger ... => ice cold sugar fights! woooo-hoooo!  Edited by stevex6

Dry cold doesn't seem to be as bad as cold in a wet climate, it was in the -20s for most of the month I was in Canada and, with no wind it was OK and not a real problem. In the UK -5 is usually pretty painful and highly uncomfortable to be out in, difficult to explain, guess you have to experience it. |

After reading some of the posts from above, it just comes to common sence with the cold cold weather:
when it gets cold in the winter months, you must dress for it and all will be fine...
Here in North Western Ontario, CANADA, nite temps are anywhere from below zero to -40c, which isn't uncommon at all come November/December/January/February...
Just dress for it & youll b fine...
Remeber to plug your car in overnite & or use a car starter & let your car warm up for 5 or 10 minutes through the nite & or 10 mins before you use the vehicle...
Where are you HELZEL? Minnesota? I'm close to the CANADA/US BORDER in Ontario, Canada.

You Canadians have the best weather there is! I grew up in the Lake Erie Snow Belt close to Erie, PA. The Canadian winds always gave us a ton of snow and cold weather. A few years ago I moved to southern PA. I would take the 6 months of white ground and weeks of minus temps any day as compared to what I have now.
I lived by the old Indian saying that white man only gets cold b/c he treats cold like an enemy. I have found this to be so true. Embrace it like most people do heat an you find you find you actually enjpoy the crisp, cold air and have a lot higher tolerance to it than most people think.
I now live near Gettysburg. Down here we get very few times where the temp goes below freezing and stays there for even a few days. The summers are horrendous. My philosophy was you could always put on more clothes to get warmer, and get you and do something. But beating the heat is a lot more tough.
One of the things I miss most is deer hunting in -10 to -15F. The woods were so still and quiet. You can't beat being miles and miles from civilization in a white-blanketed forest. You had to go (actually "hunt") find the deer b/c they were bedded down. Man I miss the north!
