AU detail, sharp strike, and no serious problems IMO. It may have been dipped and has since re-toned, either naturally or with artificial assistance. It certainly is worth a lot more than the current bid ($20.50).

I agree with Jaobler. MAYBE cleaned, but not harshly. The bid price in the Greysheet for an AU is about $105. XF - $60 and VF - $27. A bid of $40 might give the current bidder reason to pause. At the moment I think it will go for about $80 or so. This auction is going to be fun to watch!
The areas of concern about the hair, 14ers, is light wear on the high points. That is what makes this coin a technical AU-50. Not a concern for me.
BUT! And this is most important: If your first reaction was that of something being "off", then it may be best for you to listen to your gut and let it go. That "Gee, I wish that I didn't buy this" feeling is not at all pleasant.
I am sure that we will all support you with either decision that you make.

I just sent this to the seller:
Dear cookbook202,
While I am not personally interested in this coin, I and several other members of an online coin group are advising a potential bidder about the 1897 quarter. We would like a few more pictures, especially of the obverse. Our concern is not about the technical grade - we all agree that it is an AU. However, we are a bit concerned about a POSSIBLE light cleaning done long ago. If you were to send me the photos, I would share them with the potential bidder and our members. Or add them your offer. This would be a nice type coin at the right price. Thank you for your time. Matthew

NOT SO FAST, Raymo52! Dear studmv, I've already deleted the e-bay pictures, but I will take some more. I agree with what your group says as well.. Coin is super all around except for the toning.. I think it must have been dipped somehow to tone it.. Give me your e-mail address and I'll try to get them out to you tonight if I can. I have to take pictures of some other type coins tonight anyway.. Thanks JIM Oh by the way I just saw the button on this e-mail where it says attach photos.. This is the first time I have seen that and it will make it easier for me.. Let me try that before you give my an address.. - cookbook202 He appears to be an honest chap. Let's see if he comes through. There are a few, precious few, ebay sellers who are decent folk. Let's all give them the benefit of the doubt ... BUT REPORT THE ABUSERS!!!!!

Good to his word, five additional photos are now available. Same site, but you'll need to scroll down a bit. A nice looking quarter dollar.

Update from seller: Dear studmv, Thanks you for your comments.. I try to be 100% honest and as descriptive as a can. However I'm not perfect either.. From my 8 years on e-bay I've have 1 bad feedback which came last month with the buyer saying he didn't get the item although the post office said it was delivered [ the bronx NY ] go figure. I guess this coin will bring about 80.00, but e-bay has its way, it could end up anywhere between 45 and 100, but who knows.. Thanks JIM - cookbook202 As for my ebay name: First four letters of my last name, and the first letters of my first and middle names. "MV" = Matthew Vincent. Chosen when I was new to the Internet, I did not know the the "rules" yet. I like it though. Easy to type, unlike my email name which is 15 characters long.

Thank you all for your input and efforts here! I am amazed at what my question led to here. At the moment, I am high bidder but due to the reality of my budget I expect to get blown away in the final seconds. At least I can feel like I "own" it for another 2.5 days!

It looks like a AU coin. As others have said, it has been cleaned and from the offset close pic, maybe whized.
