Coin Clubbing

WOW that is good info SAP . I am about to start a coin club. And that will help me try to keep it going smooth.

Thanks! Sap! Well, that's great. I might join one in my neighbourhood, but I'm heading into the IB Program in High School next year, so time might be an issue.

The Lansing (Michigan) Coin Club, which meets once a month, is also a combination of all three of Sap's club types. Generally there is something educational, a live presentation or a video -- last week we watched an ANA video on detecting altered coins. There is general meeting business (planning for shows, what to do with our money, planning a social event like going to a Lansing Lugnuts ball game), a drawing for door prizes (usually four or five, always silver coins, generally foreign), and an auction. I've gotten some tremendous bargains at those auctions. It's the main reason I go.

I recommend you do everything in your power to join or start a club that will have some young people in it. There's nothing more boring than a bunch of old men sitting around complaining like a bunch of old women. Maybe it's because I already am an old woman, so I don't need to hear it from them.

Sap, you wouldn't happen to know any around the NSW area? That's where I am at the moment...

My coin club here in St. Louis is outstanding, and meets the first Friday of every month. If possible, I do not fail to go! Although from talking to other folks, it sounds like many coin clubs are pretty lame, I have say that ours is excellent, very active and very enjoyable.

Our club allows anyone who cares to to set out a display of coins to sell, trade, etc. This lasts for the first two hours or so. Then, there is an auction of coins provided by anyone who has something they just want to get rid of. There are always EXCELLENT opportunities in these auctions, and it is also a good way to sell of unwanted coins. The auction typically lasts an hour. We conclude by giving away three attendance prizes, and go home!

Several things are nice and enjoyable about our show. First of all, of course, is just the other fellow coin collectors. It's surprising how savvy some of these folks are, and many have been in the hobby for many decades. Our club also provides free soda and candy bars to all, and visitors are welcome.

If you have an opportunity to start or join a club, I strongly recommend at least giving it a chance. I don't know what caliber of coin club might be supported in smaller towns, but in a metro the size of St. Louis, the quality of our club is very enjoyable.

I have no idea if there are any coin clubs around here. I'd definitely be interested in attending one or two though, if I knew whether or not they existed in my area.

I was a teenager when I last belonged to a coin club. I really enjoyed it. I haven't heard of any out here in the wilds of Colorado, including the one I belonged to all those years ago. If I knew of one, I would join.
