Well, I find that jargon astonishing.

The few American numismatists that I've met (in Europe and in the US) have been avid collectors of world coins and knowledgeable about them.

In contrast, most of the British collectors that I've met seem to collect either British or ancient and/or medieval coins.

I was interested in foreign coins from an early age because my dad often went abroad to conferences always with a bit of loose change of the country with him. It inculcated an interest in geography and foreign languages.

I have an interest in foreign coins, but I have really neglected it for a while now. Most of it has come from friends and family who have traveled abroad, but a significant portion came from my mother, who used to buy me these "Coins of the World" grab bags when I was a kid. For some reason, I think they came from Sears.

Thank you jbuck. I only started to collect them because I am new and my mom had this bag of foreign coins. Lets just say that those are what kicked me off the ground when it came to collecting.

We should be very thankful for our parents.

My mother did a lot to support me in this hobby when I was a kid. She would buy me books, magazines, folders, and miscellaneous coin. She frequently took me to the bank and the coin shop. Also, both of my parents were very gracious in allowing me to sort though their change on a regular basis.

Of course, there are the two Eisenhower dollars that my father gave me, which was the spark that started it all.

My parents don't do all that, but if I asked I'm sure they would. My dad and I also metal detect and he also has somewhat of a coin collection, well a coin hoard in my opinion.

Just knowing they would says a lot.

Hi YoungNumismatist.

So you and your dad go metal-detecting! Totally sweet! I have a question for you: do you find that certain years of coins get really corroded faster than others? You must find all sorts of coins and stuff. I don't metal detect myself, but I've noticed that the plated coins really go downhill much faster than the older solid single metal coins do. Is it just me or have you noticed the same thing?

I haven't really had that problem, but I have noticed that it all depends on the area's soil and other factors around that. One thing I have noticed is that it is easy to tell the period of a penny that you get because of the composition of the penny before and after 1982.

Youngnumismatist, Its great to get started early! I've been collecting for ages, but only just started branching out, now that I can start using paypal and ebay and be treated like a human when I enter a bank.

Good luck, and If you want any UK stuff, Id be more than happy to trade with you.

Alright. You wouldn't happen to have any 1997 sets, I don't care if they are put together by you or you bought them like that. I mean every coin from 1997. That is my birthyear by the way. Thanks for anything you have.
