Hi folks, here is a link to the law in the U.S. regarding damaging coins. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/331Note the word FRAUDULENT. You can do whatever you want to the coins as long as they do not misrepresent. Carve a hobo nickel? Legal. Engrave a love token? Legal. Cut a Morgan with a band saw? Legal. Alter a date or mint mark? Illegal. Cut down a cent to use as a dime in a coke machine? Illegal. Use a 3D scanner and CNC mill to make your own copy dies to create error coins? Illegal. As a carver of hobo nickels (I teach hobo nickel carving at the ANA summer seminar), I find artistically altered coins to be very interesting and when I can take a coin I paid about $2 for and turn it into something I can sell for several hundred, I'm a happy camper. Joe Paonessa America's greatest left handed hobo nickel carver (North of Chicago)

The second photo shows the tips of some of the steel hand gravers I use. No power/air tools.

Quote: I drill holes in Zincolns to use them as washers. You can't buy a washer at Lowes for a penny! Harbor Frieght an entire box of assorted sizes Copper washers runs about $10. A nut/washer/bolt factory by me sells them, Copper ones, by the pound. Quote: When I was a teenager my one of my brothers and I would put them on the railroad track to see how flat they could get. Seems there wasn't much difference in thickness of the cents, nickels and dimes. Didn't do quarters, too many candy bars could be bought with one of those at five cents apiece Isn't that a law that all kids MUST do that? Quote: Not only is it wrong to do this to coins. I think its against the law to deface coins to the point they can not be used in commerace. Why would coin collectors damage coins? I can see making jewelry out of worn out coins. But to outright destroy them and take thes away from generations to come. Well to me this is just flat out WRONG.
There was a post some time back about all the things people do to coins. Sure wish one of the Moderators would link to that. You'ld love the replys. Quote: Wasn't there a famous cowboy sharpshooter that would toss a silver dollar in the air and put a bullet through the center of it? Not long ago a TV show called History Detectives tried to find out if a person that had a coin with a bullet hole was done by Anne Oakly. Also, Wild Bill was famous for doing that.

I'm not sure if this counts as mutilating, but you can tone silver coins black by putting a warm hard boiled egg in a jar with the silver coin.

I engrave on silver, copper and nickel. I make "love tokens" and "hobo nickels". I am just a beginner. Gives me something to do on cold winter nights.
