I'm curious as to the difference between a 1/2 kilo and a 500 gram bar.

Amaths the 5oz bars id jump on bring a nice premium The 10oz are common not worth it
Ed there is no difference just a different stamp was used. 500g is a rarer bar only a few hundred made in the mid 70s before they swithed the stamp to half kilo abd 1/2 kilo

Thanks, swrbxxx. It's nice learning new things here everyday. Any idea how many 1/2 kilo poured bars were made?
Btw, there is only one such bar left at the dealer's. :)

Yes no difference as 1000 grams is a kilo, or 32.15 troy oz....
I think they are pretty darn rare, but I see them up ever couple of weeks and always a couple listed way high....
There is a Foster old pour up right now, which is close at 15.9 oz.. I offered 600, instant DELCINED, can you blame them, lol....

Quote: there is no difference just a different stamp was used. 500g is a rarer bar only a few hundred made in the mid 70s before they swithed the stamp to half kilo abd 1/2 kilo Ah, so the difference is one of labeling and rarity rather than of any real substantive difference. Gotcha.

I have worked for a big and well known company the likes of Colonial Acres. And I can tell you, in the so many years I've been buying and selling bullion for that company, this is the ONLY one I've ever seen. The moment I saw it, I was like "Wow!" It was a very old lady who sold it to our company, maybe 70-80 yrs old. She claims that the bar came from her father. She mentioned that she had about 7 or 9 more of the same bar, and that she will bring them in again (but she never did). Anyway, I've always wondered how rare this "500 grams" Johnson and Matthey silver bar is. All I know is I've only seen one ever in the so many years I've been buying and selling the stuff. Based on the serial #, there is at least 10,000 made; but how many are really still around? It would be safe to assume many have been either melted, or perhaps, kept safe in bullion vaults, just based on the lack of any type of information about them and how rarely they show up. Also, I seldom see a certificate on silver bars, except on the more modern ones made by new refiners; this one has one, BUT the lady said she might have mixed the certificate with another because she provided us with the wrong one as you can see in the picture (the bar has "7" as the last no. while the cert has "3"). Anyway, I hope this helps everyone interested in knowing how rare the 500 gram JM silver bars are even if I was not really able to provide a figure. I hope that someone can tell me how much they are worth? I'm not interested in selling, just interested in knowing. Advanced thanks.

Nice bar and with the assay I have had 5 of these bars in my possession.
Only 2 have had the assay with them.
I sold one for $800 when silver was $23.00 and sold one with the assay last week for $850. So that will give you a grasp of the premium you can get.
Also on the back of the assay is there any writing like a date? or a bank it was at?

@SWRBXX: As I've just mentioned, the serial no. on the bar and the assay are not the same. How I wish that old lady provided me the correct one. There are columns at the back of the certificate, with date, description, and etc as the titles, but nothing was written on it. No date, no bank. Thanks for giving me an idea on the value.
