I've found three from roll searching since I started in early 2010 (a little over 8 years ago). An 1883 (most recent), 1906, and 1907. They are out there. Just gotta keep searching.

These are collection/storage jug dumps. The circulating IH stapled by the time I was searching rolls in 1959. Maybe would find a very worn one, slicks, but if you find any now, high impossible to have lasted. And yea, collection dumps are happening a lot. More when times are tough than this year!

340,000 cents searched and 9 Indian Head cents found. That's pretty amazing, I agree they were dumps oldest was 1887 and 4 were 1907. I have about 80 Lincoln's from 1909 -1939 I found in the 340G I searched with 1917 and 1919 being the commonest. Best was an fine 1924 S that one surprised me. One 1909 plain and 2 1910's and 5 1927's. I get a kick out of the old ones in bank rolls.

They surface now and again, and at the oddest times. I've found them in both CWR and MWR... I estimate one turns up about every 100,000 or so coins I search... I'd have to tally my numbers to be sure though.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Based on the hunting I've done, wheaties turn up roughly 1 in every 250, indian heads every 1 in 20,000. I've found 80 wheaties for every indian head I've found.

Over the past 5 and a half years I have found a total of 26 IHC. At the same time I have found 12,253 wheat cents. So one IHC in every 471 wheat cents found.

I found this coin in my change about five years ago. I wondered about the probability of finding an Indian Head penny in circulation which is how I happened on this thread. There were a wide variety of estimates, but as I understand the posts the answer seems to be somewhere between 1 in 20,000 and 1 in 400,000. A surprisingly wide range I thought but maybe almost all Indian Head Pennies found today were put back into circulation by somebody and if you happen to live near somebody that recently did that your chances go up? Or maybe there is a difference in the source of coins that people were looking through? I'd be interested in whatever anybody has to say about this coin. Thanks, Dave

Hi Coinfrog, :) When I looked about five years ago it seemed like it was worth about $2 retail. It looks like no trip to Tahiti for me from the sale of this coin. Still finding it was fun and now I have a souvenir of a trip to Home Depot with my daughter.

Dave - This would commonly be described as damaged, or a cull. The approximate retail price of the 1907 in a solid nice Good condition would be about $1.25, so I'm guessing perhaps 30 cents for this, though I doubt anyone would give you even that. But it is a great souvenir and a seldom-seen thing these days.

Only ever found 1 in over 30 years of off and on coin roll hunting. 1896.
I'd say I've been through 400 boxes give or take in that time period. About 1 box a month sometimes more, sometimes less, just an average. They were times doing 10 boxes a month for half a year.
1 out of a million seems about right from my experience in finding them. Found a lot of things of interest, but only 1 IHP ever from circulation.
