It is either a smash job(stacked coins hammered together) or it is the remains of glue from dimes stuck to the nickel, PMD either way. Based on the first photo, I am inclined to think it is glue. |

Bio is all over this one...nickel is really hard to indent, I was thinking the same thing...glue.

Give it an acetone tone bath & watch your error disappear. I'd leave it alone, just as an educational piece.

I agree, and it should feel noticeably different; like plastic instead of metal.

No one said it was an error. It's an interesting find. I assure you an acetone bath won't cause it to disappear.

If I had to guess, I'd say someone glued the coins together and put it in some kind of press. I doubt its a 'classic hammer job' as nickel is too hard to create this nice/deep of impression. Based off the responses, I'd say the picture isn't doing it justice.

jbuck, That portion of my email was in reference to someone saying that the "error" would disappear with acetone. The impression on the nickel is not a glue impression. The dime impression is an impression into the metal. It won't wash off.

I still think it is glue, as do most of us; especially when I look at the area of the nickel to the right of Monticello (left side of the photo). But you are correct, if this is an impression into metal, it will not wash off. |

I've seen something similar when cleaning the cup holder in my car after a soda spill that sat for way too long. When you pull the coins apart, it leaves an impression on the coin that was stuck to it in what used to be soda. You can tell by the backwards lettering. This could be a case of a few coins in a cup holder stuck together for a while.
I don't know, just my thoughts.
