You won't see a hanging on a George VI coin, but die clashes do exist for those years as well. The marks are different since the design is. On a 1937-1952 coin, you tend to see the inside of his ear between the branch and the leaf,the top of his head under "1 cent" and his neck through the date. Some other marks can be visible, but are less common.
@EY_Pep: Yes, you can find hangings in your change, they are especially common for the years 1962-1963.

You need the 65 to finish the date set of these :)then worry about the doubles, triples and quads lol

By the way, l went through my book to see what l have for hangers so maybe you will have a better list to complete your set - as stated above they only apear after the effigy change in 53 and run up to modern but l will only list the 53-65s here.

@dvntmstr: I've got one or two where the clash occurs further to the right so it's more of a hanging bud than a hanging # if you count those differently.

On what years kuh_85 ? l have several years of "hanging buds but theyre all between 77-82 although the 65s are close

Yes, you can find hanging digits in the KGVI years, but they don't look quite the same as the ones in the Elizabeth years. For one, the portrait of the king faces in the opposite direction to QEII, so any jawline "hanger" will be all by itself in the field below the right leaf. I have at least one of these, so they are out there. The hanging digit in the date is generally the 3rd digit, not the last one as normally see in the 50's. This is a die clash caused by the back of the king's head, so it's more or less a straight line that runs out of the top of the "4" and up into the left leaf. This variety is fairly common, and I believe it's found on all the years from 1937 - 1952. It's often found in conjunction with a clash line that runs up from the large bud, either to the stem or all the way up to the left leaf, and sometimes, though not as often, it will be accompanied by a curved line die clash that rises out of the top of the left leaf, through the bottom of the "1", and under the word "Cent". While this particular clash is common in the KGVI nickels, it's found on the penny too, so keep your eyes open.

I just checked through my collection of young portrait QEII hanging digits and I may have a few to add to your list. On the 1953 both the SF and NSF have a hanging 3 and double hanging 3. 1958 has a low hanging 8 and a high hanging 8 as well as a very heavy low hanging 8 clash which has the clash of the 8 under the queen's chin on the obverse. On the 1959 there is a low hanging 9 as well as a high hanging 9. On one of my 1961's the clash doesn't have the "cross-piece" -- it's only a straight line up and down coming out of the top of the 1. The 1962, in addition to the several varieties you listed, also has a plain low hanging 2 and a high hanging 2. There is also a variety which the hanger misses the 2, but instead runs down the right side of the 2, and on the obverse of this coin the top of the 2 is clashed under the queen's chin. On a side note I also have a very weak single hanging 2, but on a clipped coin -- circulated, but still kind of a nice bonus. On the 1963 there is also a low hanging 3 and a high hanging 3.
You also have the 1955 hanging 5 -- is this on the small denticle variety? Mine is, and in fact I've never seen one on the large denticle type and don't know if they exist. And last but not least, there is a quintuple hanger on the 1962. I've don't own one -- not yet! -- but I have seen a picture of one -- you've probably seen the link yourself in these threads.
I'll let you know of I come across any others.

thanks pennysaver l will go through the rest of what l have and see if l can add more to my book - l have 20+ mixed rolls of pennies l put aside with clashes to add to my set but havent got there yet and l have around 100 more in flips for the book that havent made it in there yet lol
l will check my 53s again. As far as the 55s go l have a bunch of them laying around so l will check to see if theyre large or small denticle
l missed the 62 quintuple in my list l do have that one though. l have a couple different 61s that didnt make the list either because theyre in the box still. Also there is an interesting 63 that l included in the envelope for you with the denticle clash.

A bunch of MS66 hanging cents just sold on ebay. I am not sure if there was a 62 but there was a 59, a 63, a 64 and a couple of others. They all went in the $150 to $200 or so I think. |
