And what a great question
I have always looked for the dot to see if the copper is minted in Perth BUT have NEVER even taken a second thought as to where the dot is placed.
Sort coins, sort coins OK a dot that is Perth Mint , NEVER a second look.
So fantastic question, I would imagine a whole bunch of us will be looking through our copper buckets over the next few days
Well spotted and well done Mate

Renniks variety book has it listed. This book has hundreds more varieties than Fred's book.

Yes, Rennicks possible choice of 3, the first seeming the most appropriate.
1.Mint mark dot low and very close
2.Mint mark dot very close
3.Mint mark dot wide and low

I went through all my 1944 y. and found at least 5 different varieties of the placement of the dot:

1944-Y.-Penny-Dropped-Dot?

1944-Y.-Penny-Dropped-Dot?

1944-Y.-Penny-Dropped-Dot?

the 1943 y. also appears to have a number of variations in the placing of the dot. I have counted 7 varieties in this year but no pictures yet.
Perhaps each individual die had a different dot!

The dot must have been added by hand to each die.

thanks everyone, I agree with enworb, with such variation in both 1944 y. and 1943 y., I think it is right in saying that dot was hand drilled into the die. That would make many varieties in these years.

or punched?
You can see similar variations with mintmarks on US coins when the letters were hand punched.

And this is the problem with modern coins. All the dies are machine made on CNC milling machines etc.
There is no character to the mintage's anymore.

Sorry, rant over.

Nice find guys.

Renniks lists 32 different errors and varieties for the 1944 Penny.! If you are lucky enough to have few of this year it can certainly been a full afternoon of noodling.
It can also send you a bit loopy.
