i bought it I think from jaggars or one of the coin shops about 15 years ago I asked them if they had somthing unusual that mite be worth somthing one day so he sold me this and a run off $5 notes with strange numbers for I think $900 this coin is so lucky we had a house fire about 2 years ago on our farm and lost everthing but this coin was in a old gun safe and the old hot water system had aspetos cover and when it fell over it coverd the old gun safe dead set there was nothing but ashes being in the country it took 1hour and 8 miutes to get the fire trucks here and the only thing we could find was under the old water system so theres a cool story about how lucky it is to even being around soryy for typing in caps I had no idea shane

I would say $900 is a pretty good buy. Lucky coin that one. If you can afford to hold onto it I would. Rare coins like yours seem to have fairly good appreciation.

It's in McDonald's catalogue page 135. Suggests a gEF would get $8,500.
IAG Feb 2006 gEF sold for $2,600 + comm
For such a rarity I don't believe a number could be put on it. Put it in a public auction and see where the bidding takes it.

. Whatever you decide to do with this coin you will not find better advice than the experts at C.C.F. Congrats on a great story, this is what makes numismatics so much fun.!!

Shane: for a start, nowhere does it say 50 cents... there are many other reasons, but at the heart of it, it was not released as legal tender under a currency determination as required by law. That said, I agree it would probably raise enough to buy a small second hand car at public auction. Trout: my bad, my database has been neglected recently so I don't have an up-to-date number... this was discussed here in another thread some time ago, and kicked off some debate about what should and what shouldn't be included in the total number... for me and my collection the total includes circulating, specimen, proof and precious metal issues from both the RAM and the PM. Others have different views, but hey, that's what makes the world a great place - we are all different! You could also count die varieties (as I do), such as the tilted 7, double bar's and incused, as they are from a distinguishable and different die, but that is where the debate gets a little more animated... I don't count varieties like all the different Cud versions on the 2005 remembrance 50c, as it was not a different die (at least in my mind, some of the more experienced may correct me...?). So it all comes down to what you include on your list... it's a personal thing... TPP's site is a good list of circulating (and a most NCLT) 50c's issued by the RAM. One of these days I will get back to updating my database and then I will come back to you (unless someone else with more time gets to it first) and that will probably spark off the debate once again... ;-)

with Steve, If it is legal tender and it an Australian 50 cent coin then I will collect it. Circulation coins,NCLT,different mint marks, classic errors,or proof. i only have 93 different 50 cent coins so far and I have barely scratched the surface yet. The $1 coins are just as difficult to collect all of them as the 50 cent coins. Both coin types have a huge amount of different issues and both have been used on a regular basis over the years as a commemorative coin. Great sets to get your teeth into

Great explanations Steve and Trout. I am beginning to appreciate decimal collecting more and more thanks to the interesting topics you guys present.Do the Dollar coins one can obtain from the Mint have a unique mintmark that is collectable and are they included in your lists.?

I believe they are included. If I collected them I certainly would.
