the third one down definitely looks like a nail hole in the middle. Looks like it was nailed back when the nails were square

Considering the size of bullets in the Civil War, that penny would have become part of the shrapnel that killed the guy carrying it.
Those are great coins. And personally, if they could talk I would think they would be filing assault charges. LOL

A culled coin needs a loving home too! I have several and it's an affordable way to fill in those holes in the large cent collection.

Sorry.... Nothing to contribute, regarding the counterstamped coin. Unless simple initials are set in relief, akin to a known silversmith's hallmark, they're virtually impossible to attribute. Fun items to own, nevertheless.

Excessively worn = honorable service in commerce but without a place in my collection. Deliberately damaged = downright depressing; a dis-service to any coin. I have worse examples than these... just waiting for the right opportunity to give them a more appreciative home.

Quote: 1844/81? ...there is such a thing? i think what looks like a bit of extra metal by the 4 is a result of PMD. These two were found some time ago by my sharp-eyed brother in a plowed field while surface hunting for artifacts: '10' of the date is clearly readable, but not much else. This one has us stumped, datewise.. 'ONE CENT' is clear enough, but the wreath seems odd: [contrast enhanced to bring up detail]

Here's an 1844/81 on ebay to compare: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1844-81-Bra...em337dbee263 ... check out the pics Note the curvature of an 8, adjacent to the top right of the first 4 in 1844. It looks in your pic as if there's something there. I just couldn't discern if it might be that variety, but it appears to be that something's there, in that spot. Perhaps it is PMD?

..how 'bout that. The overdate features are easy to see on that coin. Thanks for the link. Mine definitely does not have the curve, or the two prongs on the second 4. Also I am not set up for photos of much better quality than the ones I posted.
