Test all backgrounds, subtle colour change will be noticed.
Don't use flecky backgrounds (Like on your '31 florin)

Make a collage so you can view side by side.

Same coin same lighting Different backing.
1) Clear acrylic
2) Light Grey
3) Light Blue
4) Black

The almost neutral Light Grey backing reproduces
the coin in hand look.

The halfpenny Test Ref Sheet was created for my
Canon Powershot SX130IS
A fully auto, or fully manual, or fully programeable.
Macro can be set for auto or manual.
Lens is a Fixed Canon Zoom.
A very versatile Point and Shoot.

The camera You use is the important thing.
Get the White Balance First.
Have the Light Selection suitable for camera sensor.
Some cameras prefer Halogen, others Compact Flouro
and others LED.
The cameras I have used have worked best with Flouro and LED
have not had much luck with Halogen.

Price paid for a camera doesn't seem to matter either

The shot below is a collage taken with :-
A $20 Plastic Lens Sanyo &
My now ageing 5mp LZ1 Panasonic (7 years old)

The Sanyo is full Auto, the Panasonic Manual White Balance.

Thanks once again for the info. Capturing clear in-focus shots add to an already interesting pastime for me.

Good photo. I would suggest that discolouration is from sticky tape rather than pvc. Eucalyptus oil is meant to be pretty good for it.

Just removed the coin from an old Navy Blue Rennicks album. All coins from this page are depressingly similar.
