H - Horizontal
V - Vertical
B - Both
N - Neither
I got that part. What now?!

I think I hinted at this before, but v1, w1, and y1 are the one letter words and they are quite similar. Try v1 = w1, v1 = y1, w1 = y1, or v1 = w1 = y1 (one of these must be true) and see where it gets you. Try it where each of those is A, and where each of those is I.

Ok, I did that and have formed my idea on which one is the a and which is the i. There are a few more combos that have a 1 (C1, D1 etc.) Am I correct to assume that these equal a or I as well?

I think you made an error in using H2 for the "C" in Charles.
I picked up early on that there were four groups of letters, and that V1=W1=X1=Y1=Z1, but without the hints I don't know that I would have realized how to assign letters to the four groups. I worked on this the first night, then came back to see the answer - got lucky to solve it 2nd.

And as you all have figured out, the code grouped letters by their appearance. V letters have vertical symmetry: A,M,U,V,W,T AND Y H letters have horizontal symmetry: B,C,D,E,K B letters have BOTH vertical and horizontal symmetry: H,I,O,X N letter have NO symmetry: F,G,J,L,N,P,Q,R,S,Z The letters were then assigned numbers by their place in the assigned groups: The letter B = H1 (Horizontal symmetry, 1st letter of that type in the alphabet). I , of course, couldn't just have a simple substitute cipher so the H letters had one of the next 5 letters in the alphabet (after H) assigned to it in order through the code. So, B could be I1,J1,K1,L1 OR M1. And the rest they say is history!!  Nice work on this JohnPaul and jg86! Tzarmarko, you get long-term Brownie Points for working at this so hard!!  Edited by Moe145

Damn, I was on the right track but I didn't think of the both category. Well done to those who got it but can I suggest that in the future, maybe send the answer as a PM so the slow ones here can still have a crack.
