It's a beautiful Love Token in its' own right - excellent, professional craftsmanship.

How did they attribute this dollar as a proof?

The die markers for Morgan Proofs are known - most of them were also used later in business strikes. For 1887, enough of the markers (VAM-32 is the Proof die pair) are known in areas on the obverse which would have survived what happened here to make positive identification possible. Not all years would necessarily have been possible, but this one was.

That actually is a very well done love token and appears a lot of effort was put into it.

Odd question: Was there an "accepted order" of overlap which would allow someone to translate the initials in proper order?

So as far as "Love Tokens" are concerned, would that cleaning effect the value?

I've been buying and selling love tokens since I learned about them in the late 1980's. This is a great way to cherry pick your local B&M. In the last month I've bought three and almost doubled my money. Some coin guys treat love tokens like the plague. Take their ignorance to the bank. If you have never seen or heard of these, be sure to look at some on ebay. There are ones with artwork that is unbelievable.

The B&M near me has a Seated half dollar love token but someone has added to the artwork with random deep scratches.

Jaymon74,

I would say maybe because this hurts eye appeal. Just like any antique, a harsh cleaning is almost always bad. However, their is no set values for these things so they'll bring what somebody is willing to pay. And in some cases it's a lot.

that one should be SPL I think. The initials goes the Middle is the one the represents the Last name, the others the first latter will look like it is in front of the second letter in this case it would be S in front of the P. This is how I would translate these initials anyway

On this one my question is what in the world is that on the tip of the L, I have no idea what that is supposed to represent, was thinking JR or something but I don't see a "J", just the R

I'm thinking SRL. The shading in the object under the right of the 'L' matches the shading on the letter that looks like a P.
That thing is awesome.

I would value this piece on the merit of the artwork alone.

That is so cool. If it was mine, I'd consider changing my name to match the initials!
Okay, not really. But it is beautiful work.
