Interesting article .. I too will be watching out for some of these coins.

Not to be negative .. I am curious about this statement.

Proof sets returned in 1968 after a five-year hiatus

Am I missing something? I know there are 1964 proof sets.
And of course there are 1968 proof sets. To me that leaves
1965, 1966 and 1967.. three years

Great Article CC,

I was looking for just this type of info on the Ike's. Something just screamed out to me that Ike's were unappreciated.

Thanks

Glad to see a small dollar on the list! Us small dollar searchers needed some validation (and more people in the searching thread). :D

I took a poll back in 2011 and the general consensus was that SBAs were the least favorite. Just a thought, as I know that they will become more collectible in 30-50 years, as do all coins. but right now I don't think they're as popular. Which still means they could be cherry picked and sold to the few collectors, but personally I don;t think its worth the time.

I'm lucky... I'm young enough that I can buy now and hold small dollars until they are worth something...

I have 50 years
I actually like SBA's!

SBA's are beautiful! Don't know why rachum always chimes in and has to try to convince everyone they aren't popular & worthless of anyone's time. :( I guess I'll always be here to provide a counter-argument. :D I find more keepers than I do junk coins (meaning coins that are worth at least 2x face value) so it doesn't seem like too much of a waste of time. I've also found out that there are very serious SBA collectors out there that will pay a VERY high premium for SBA's in MS65+, especially if they have full talons! I haven't found a coin with a higher percentage of keepers (could be sold for an immediate profit) than I do with SBA's. Each to their own I guess, more for me!

The top Susan B Anthony registry set sold for $65,000. So I guess I stand behind my suggestion.

cc99999, if I have or get the recommended coins, do you think it wise to get them graded?

@Bladd,

The 1968 s proof quarter would need to be in a TPG holder designating the deep cameo. There are many cameo coins that don't make the cut for deep cameo.

I don't see a need to holder the ASE as it is clear to determine the type.

Another great article...

I disagree with searching for most of the late '60's nickels in six steps though. They're great to find but you can go blind trying. I prefer searching for coins that offer a higher probability of success and where near misses are nearly as good as a hit. This is well exemplified by the '81-S dollar. If you look at about 110 of these one will stand out. It won't be worth a lot of money probably but you'll have a nice Gemmy coin. Every once in a while you'll find a spectacular coin. Of course part of the joy of looking for something like an '81-S is that you get to look at a lot of other 1981 coins at the same time and they can be just as much fun to find in spectacular condition as the '81-S (just more commonly found). Actually some '81 issues are just as tough as the dollar. The '81-P quarter is probably just as difficult to find with nice surfaces and as high grade. Two side PL Denver nickels are fun to seek.

There are always more moderns to seek. No matter how good a coin you find there's every chance an even better example exists. For some reason many people think this is to their detriment. I disagree; finding better coins and new varieties in terra incognita is the epitome of the hobby for me.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

CentMan-Im not trying to say theyre worthless. Theyre not my favorite. Or everyone elses. But that doesn't make them bad..I took a poll and I was stating the results and my opinions from the results.
