Also, the ping test is really unreliable. Held the right way, I can make a lump of silver sound like lead or a silver clad lead bar ring like solid silver.

What exactly are you basing that on? Although there are of course more accurate ways to test silver that are well known and should be employed if the suspected bar doesn't 'ping', the ping test is a quick/easy no-brainer for starters. I know in some cases real silver doesn't ping easily, but if struck under the right conditions (suspended or otherwise unobstructed) it should, and I've never known a fake silver bar to have the high tone long resonance ping like solid silver in my 30 plus years of handing A LOT of silver bullion including more than a few fakes. I should probably note that my senses are unusually acute...

Basing that on seeing a dealer make a fake bar ring like solid silver and at the same time not being able to get a ping out of a pure silver RCM 100oz.

Even if I saw that myself I wouldn't necessarily believe it... certaintly not without:
A) solid confirmation that the 'pingless' silver bar was in fact all pure 100% silver
B) detailed information on exactly how the fake bar wasn't genuine (lead filled, less pure alloy, etc.).

Still, I think we agree that it's always a good idea to make sure any bullion you buy is as advertised. What method of testing silver for authenticity do you consider the most reliable?

I assume we are looking for the quick and dirty as oppose to the absolutely most reliable. If the latter, drill holes + acid test. For doing a quick assessment I use density + visual. If the bar questioned is the exact dimension as a real one, it should weigh the same.

Correct assumption, and I agree those are reliable methods. I'm considering getting an ultrasound unit.

You can bank on getting 480-525 at today's price.....and if you are little bit patient, probably get around 550-575. Personally I want to say $320 and buy it from you.... Cant do that though...too honest. I've been wanting a 10oz RCM bar for a long time now because I like them and am patriotic...almost wish you would trade me for it. I would send you a PM but your e-mail through CCF is turned off. You mentioned he had more than 1.
