The high bidder was a CU forum member, and there was a contest between several members who knew exactly what they were doing. No one will get stuck with the coin. It'll never leave Beijing.

Quote:No one spent $100k. This no doubt went to one of a group of knowledgeable bidders who bid up fake coins so that new folks will not be fooled and buy them. They won't pay and will tell ebay about the fake. Yup

A typical 1796 off-centered bust dollar Counterfeit. They are easy to spot as the bust on the Counterfeit is located far to the left(not centered). The Chinese Counterfeiter that made this coin made the mistake using an authentic 1795 Draped Dollar as his model. Unfortunately for him, he used the 1795 off-centered variety. Other major problems with the coin is the pimpling all over the coin. I'm sure this seller will be NARU'd from ebay inside a week.

I like how ebay had this as their spotlight sale in their new (and dumb) "what's hot" feature right before pulling it completely and banning the seller. Way to go, guys.

Quote: id pay 100,000 in monopoly money Years ago when ebay was more flexible, I created an ID just to toy with the fake coin scammers. I remember winning a fake, sending him play money with a note "fake money for a fake coin". I provided my address in his hometown--the police station.

Quote: 28 bidders? People can behave at times like herds of cattle all following behind one another when they think that they can get a steal of a deal. The emotional of fear, however, will always remain significantly stronger than the feelings of greed which is why only 28 bidders were involved. If it had been perceived as a genuinely authentic piece, we could have seen over 100 bidders. mdpmedia
