edgman,

I got that as an 11 piece set in an old white Capital plastic holder, the one where the plastic screws hold it together. What's funny is that the screws have turned almost the same shade of color is the nickels. For < $70, I think I got a bargain for these coins.

I do think that a few of them are close to FS, but there are some small breaks here and there. I'm also working on a PCGS MS-67 set of these (FS or no FS), and some dates are hard to come by.

Elmer

If your looking for MS66 or 67 I recommend looking in collectorscorner.com. Its part of the PCGS site. Was up there looking yesterday (Sunday) and they had quite a number of 66 and 67 war nickles available. These are PCGS slabbed though. Didn't know if you were looking for slabbed or not. Don't know how you could improve on the set you got. The price you paid was great also. Love that toning. Only problem with slabbed coins is they usually wont tone like that.

Unfortunately, I also think I have to move this to Modern US coins.
Glad you did; I might not have seen it.

Very nice set of nickels, Elmer!

Beautiful set!

I was told that plexiglass would not tone coins. So are the Capital holders some other plastic or is it just that the holders are not airtight?

I made a plexi holder for my Franklins years ago (1970s) and the better ones seem the same as what they were when put into the holder.

@jbuck
So then I assume environment surrounding the Capital holder is what made them tone the color they are instead of say, rainbow toned.

@GoldenChest
Fortunately when I was a kid, it took time, but was not impossible to assemble a set of these by roll searching. This was the late 60s/early 70s when silver was 2.80 or so per dollar - and people were able to keep a lot more of their own money. So it seemed it was only people looking for collections that were doing much roll searching.

It was fun opening a roll and not only getting a couple silvers in them, but also getting quite a few 40% JFKs also.

All the pieces in that holder were from circulation!

Great looking set Elmer. You have some real nice ones there. I always thought Capital plastic was inert.

As a rule, I'm not a fan of toned coins.
But your set breaks my rule - those are wicked nice War Nicks!

Great set and good photography on them too. I don't believe I see any 6FS nickels, but I think I see some 5FS.

I don't think the capital holder toned these coins like this. I would have been the environment.

Correct. That, and reaction with anything that may have been already on the coins.

I believe that they are. I only have one, but the coins in it look as they did when they were put in.

Storage location is always the biggest factor. Even a slab will leak.
