muddler, I am with you. As a Cameo proof collector, I think its crazy that they gave it a Cameo grade. The obverse, sure. Last I checked though, you needed cameo on both sides of the coin, and all I see on the reverse is colors and a square!

Cameo coins in the earlier proof sets are uncommon and therefore special. My understanding is only the early die states showed Cameo coins (not sure of this) Some one can chime in and when it happened but somewhere along the line the mint started etching the die's so that they all have a cameo look and even have developed a reverse proof where the fields are etched and the devices mirror like. Hondo, I'm surprised the 1956 didn't get cameo and evidently the Kennedy was graded as such based on the obverse only. I like the toning on both of them but the square is a little weird :) The Kennedy is actually quite stunning.

The obverse is certainly cameo. How they got that for the reverse is beyond me. But they ARE the best after all, so we all need to blindly accept it. Hondo, that is an awesome coin dude! John and Ben make a heck of a pair there.

Maybe its just me but the reverse looks like it would have the same cameo appearance as the obverse without the toning.

Lol.
I wonder if the untoned square saved it since you can see it in that spot on the big picture anyway. Not sure what it looks like in hand

Quote: My understanding is only the early die states showed Cameo coins (not sure of this) Correct and the cameo contrast would vary. Sometimes even the earliest die states would still only be a modest cameo. Intentionally going for the Cameo look started in 1973. Reverse proof was 2006 although some of the platinum coins may have had it earlier.
