And the worst part of all this confusion is how many companies have slots for all of those in their Albums. Of course the same holds true for Proof coins. I sometimes wonder if those companies and the Mint have a thing going to make a little extra money.

Technically the 2009 - 2011 NA dollars were released into circulation but the only way they got there was from people and banks buying them directly from the mint for face value and the Mint paid the shipping to send them to you.

Large quantities of the 2009-2011 Native Dollars are in circulation in the Denver Light Rail system's ticket dispensers (I've received a few hundred of them in change myself), which suggests the local Fed branch distributed them to the armored car service who fills the ticket machines (which give dollar change amounts only in coins).

OK, I think I understand. Thanks for clarifying. I did find one 2009D Sac dollar searching 100 loose dollars from the bank, and that's all, so I'll probably just buy halves and Sac dollars off ebay or from dealers when the time comes. I'm busy noodling the lower denominations right now. There are a whole lot more 2005-2008 quarters in circulation than 2009-2010 from the rolls I've searched. I didn't see anything in Red Book about the DC Territories and first year of ATB Quarters not being released to circulation. Is that going to be a concern?

Thanks for all the help!

This is getting even stranger. Just searched 5 rolls of nickels and 5 rolls of dimes. Rolled by the bank from loose change. I found EVERY nickel and dime, both mint marks, several of each, from 2005-2010 EXCEPT not a single nickel or dime from 2009. Is that just a coincidence?

Someone might have given up the hunt, rolled their coins and deposited. Their loss, your gain!

I finally finished going through 10 rolls of nickels and 9 rolls of dimes. Out of 10 rolls of nickels, there was ONE 2009 (finally found a 2009D in the second to last roll). I don't know why the 2009 year is so rare, but I'll just try another 10 rolls. It was the same story with dimes. I found at least 3 from 1965, but only ONE from 2009. Again, a 2009D in one of the last rolls. I'll just have to get another 10 rolls of dimes as well.

I know I can just buy that one nickel and one dime I need, but it's fun to try and get them from circulation!

I've been through boxes and boxes of nickels and have only recently found my first 2009 P nickel in circulation. The ones in my albums I had to buy. I don't roll search dimes, but I've found both P & D in regular circulation change. About a dozen total now.

you found a 2009 nickel in 10 rolls? thats actually pretty good. I've searched a few hundred rolls of nickels and found a total of 3 2009 d. the 09 mintages are the lowest in about 50 years at a bit under 40 million for the p and a bit under 47 million for the d's.

you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding 2009-2011 Native American dollars. I go to the bank every once in a while to get a bunch , and I've gotten many from those years.

TJB17 - Thanks for the tip. I think I will officially give up on noodling the 2009P nickel!

justin3651 - Ditto! I wish I had a newer Red Book. My 2011 issue shows mintages through 2008. Is there a place online to find that info, or do I just need to get a new Red Rook? Can you tell me mintage for 2009P dimes?

half n a half - I'll keep looking! I still need a few Prez coins, so after another pass at quarters I think I'll get a sack of loose dollars.

Thanks again, everyone!

im not sure about what links are acceptable, I use a wikipedia.org page that lists it for nickels. go to the main page on wikipedia and search for "us nickel mintage" and it should be the top page. they have one for lincoln cents but I havent been able to find one on dimes. the page on this site on the Roosevelt dimes ( http://www.coincommunity.com/us_dim...oosevelt.asp ) says the mintage is around 97 million for the p and 50 million for the d.

The U.S. Mint website also lists production figures for all circulation coins for the last 3 years. This is where I go to find out more recent mintages.

And to explain why the mintages for 2009 dropped so low, do you remember the economy crashing in late 2008? Well that caused a LOT of people to take their change jars back to the bank to convert all that change into cash. This resulted in a HUGE over supply of coins in the Federal Reserve banking system. With so many coins on hand they had no reason to order new coins from the mint. Combine that with the down economy which always results in a lower demand for coins and there was no reason to produce new coins. Mintages for the nickels and dimes were the lowest in about 50 years. Quarter mintages also plummeted. Now we take the next step, with the "lowest mintages in 50 years" speculators scrambled to hoard all the 2009 nickels and dimes they could find. It was so crazy that when the first 2009 nickels showed up (in Puerto Rico ) The first ones that appeared on ebay sold for $118 EACH! After more became available prices dropped but for awhile rolls of 2009 nickels were selling for $100 a roll. It was nuts back then.

Very interesting! I had no idea, and would have never known had I not tried to noodle 2005-2010 from circulation. I got another 10 rolls of nickels and not a single 2009. The only pennies I missing are half of the 2009s. The only dime I'm missing, 2009. I saw that pattern and was sure someone here could explain it. Thanks, everyone! It's been very educational.
