I tried heritage and liked it except I have to pay tax, which brings the price right on par with ebay. So I figure I will stick to ebay. And I thought icg was a reputable grader?

ICG slabs trade at a large discount to PCGS/NGC. They are fine for authentication though.

HA.com tax would be a bummer. I'm afraid taxes on online sales are coming for all of us in the future.

What are your goals for this purchase? Do you have to have certified? And you might be surprised by this auction. I doubt if it goes for much above opening bid.

I would say ICG is reputable for authentication and circulated coins, but there reputation for grading MS coins is not nearly as strong as PCGS and NGC. It is certainly better than raw though, and they will give a fair ballpark grade.....but a coin where 1 or 2 MS points make a big difference in price; you will always want to go with PCGS or NGC.

My goal is a high AU or low MS coin for my type set. I'm going to crack it out anyway. I only buy slabbed because I don't trust anyone on ebay.

If it's for a crack-out then consider an ANACS or ICG AU55. Common dates in AU can normally be picked up for small premiums over melt and gold in AU usually has excellent luster. Good luck!

Yeah that's what I would like. Maybe I should see if forum members have any for sale. But yes high AU has become my favorite grade for all coins. Some look MS and they have much cheaper price tag. I'll keep searching, or I might throw in one bid on this ebay coin. Thanks everyone for the input!

By the way, ms60 is in my opinion the strangest grade. lol.

Oh and if I did buy from Broadway Coin, that coin would be nearly $520 after our California taxes. That's another reason I buy on ebay or online.

Santee....I just thought maybe if you could negotiate a little bit and then paid the sales tax you would come out OK. Just a thought.

Yeah thanks for the tip. I've never negotiated with a coin store before. lol. I've only been to a coin store once, it was actually that store. And it was when I first started collecting a couple years ago. Didn't know you could negotiate.

And it's cool to see someone from my same area. I grew up in spring valley and my wife is from la mesa. I've had friends in santee as well. There are actually a few other forum members from around here as well.

That store will negotiate on the prices, but not on sales tax. I have found that most, if you pay cash will pay the tax for you.
I like ebay as well, although it is sometimes hard to tell the true condition of a coin on there.

FYI, There is also a new store that just opened in Lakeside.

remember not everything in a slab is necessarily what originally was slabbed either.

I always ask....Is there any room on this? Or....Would you work with me a little on this one? and see what they say. You may like their answer you may not, if not ask if they could do......( fill in the blank) and see what they say. Keep it very light hearted and cordial.

I would be looking to pay somewhere between $450 & $500 for a half eagle in the grade you are looking for. Try for $450 or so and if you can't score one for that you may have to raise your offers.

The new BM is Lakeside Coin & Currency. It is on Woodside just east of Wintergardens.
