jsinger: Are you saying that that's all there is at that particular show? I haven't been but the reputation in the first couple of shows alone beat out Torex. Torex isn't even bad, it's just a large commute. I can only think of two dealers there who I would never patronize - the rest are okay and maybe 4-6 are amazing in my eyes.

Maybe back in the day Torex was great at the Primose Hotel. Maybe there needs to be a bigger and better show with more vendors.

Doubleeagle. I like auctions for a number of reasons.
1 if you buy a cheap piece, you get in the auctioneer mailing list and get the catalogs in your inbox: some of them are a quite good reference material, particular to me with a very limited interest niche.
2 you met other collectors in the view rooms
3 you get to handle awesome coins
4 free drinks, coffee, and food
Kills the time before dinner when you are on an out of town show
Besides the above, I agree with your opinions, particularly with your "drift"

@jsinger21: Our own SPP is a dealer at Coin Expo.
I am of the opinion that Torex moved downtown at least partly because of the buzz from Coin Expo. Maybe the cross-dealers caused it. Certainly much nicer after hours downtown, which you'd think is a factor for the visiting dealers.
I think the COMPETITION will make both shows constantly improve. Win-win for us.

Torex used to be good back when it was at the Raddison down on the waterfront, but it was starting to lose a little steam even the last year or so there. I think that the Coin Expo will turn into what Torex used to be. One of the big problems is that Brian isn't Ingrid and, in my opinion, TPG slabs have taken most of the fun out of most shows. Thank heavens that most shows have an auction joined to it .. it still makes it worthwhile for at least part of ne day, but I USED to go for two.

Is Ingrid still running Torex? What is the biggest coin show in Canada?

@Bill: If you're referring to spending hours pouring through books and boxes looking for jewels, I agree.
Dealers seem to ship off anything remotely interesting to ICCS these days. But, in defense, I think Chinese counterfeits would have destroyed the hobby if they did not.

Jsinger - Ingrid passed away.
In the last 3 years of her life the show was managed (he he he) by her son.

It's been that long. Sorry to hear about her loss. Then again, I haven't been to Torex since it moved from the Primose Hotel. However long that was.

Banknotes - I had about 7 coins in the auction. 5 of them were nothing special (low estimates of $100 - $300, and most fetched 30 - 40% of low estimate). I had the 1953 SF Mule ICCS VF-30 in the auction. The coin immediately before it was VF-20 Scratch, and the one after it was EF-40 Scratch, mine had no scratch and I thought it might fetch the highest of the three. The others went for $180 and $250, mine went for $125. It was a nice VF-30 as well. I also had the 1906 Small Crown, that I think Louis posted a horrible picture of. It only took in $750. I paid more for that when I bought it raw from a 0 feedback seller (I thought it was a steal at the $800 I paid for it). Small Crowns in AG have been selling for $900 - $1200 on ebay, and I thought it'd go closer to the $1200 in Torex. I did get $150 for the 1999 November Mule quarter MS-64 NBU. I wasn't expecting it to go much over $100.

The show was okay...I didn't get much, but I did get back my NS Token that SPP tested. It is now headed for Geoffrey Bell auction in the spring. Fingers crossed!!

mindfreak, I assume you had a good chat with Sandy about that token? I think you picked the right auction for that item. Good luck.

Thanks to all 3 of you involved in this experience. A "newbie" like myself sure needed your guidance and knowledge! Hope to see you at the Coin Expo.
