AU-58 at best from the rub through the mint luster on the bust of Lincoln and on the letters and wheat stalks on the reverse. The hit on the forhead won't affect the value more than the eye appeal of the coin. Anyway you look at it finding an '09 VDB in circulation looking like this has to be quite rare. Congrats on your good fortune, it's a keeper. Ed ANA -M-3175

Very nice indeed and likely made it out of a collection due to nefarious circumstances. Next up would be the inheriting a collection and just spending it.
Regardless, it is now in good hands. :) I would go with AU55. Just too much wear on it to go any higher IMO. Great find!

The VDB is very difficult to read on this coin. I have another 1909 VDB that is in EF condition, and the VDB stands out much more clearly.

I found a 1909-S VDB in circulation as well back in early January. Mine was in great shape. Yours is in far, far better shape. Simply impeccable to get something that far back in such great shape!

Railgard, you ask, "I was just curious if anyone could give some insight into where it may have come from to enter circulation so recently."
Well.......it's mine, I dropped it! Accidentally like. Yeah, that's the ticket! Could you send it back?

And cheezyfryes, please don't joke about 1964 nickels, my uncle was killed in a 1964 nickel accident (I still have bad dreams)

I'd say that VDB would grade at least XF at the absolute lowest, so hey, cool find. I found a plain and simple and very circulated 1909 in change a couple of months ago but usually I just find a Wheat cent from the 1950's here and there.

Cheezyfryes - I thought it was hilarious when I wrote it last night - I was cracking myself up. (It was, however, very late & I was sleepy). It seems my attempt at humor fell flat also. I was joking with a joker because your comment about finding 64's was funny and I got it.

Quote: Beats the 1964 nickel I got in change yesterday... and the day before... and practically every time I pay cash for anything at any location... I think the opposite, since that was my birth year, I see one and think, heck you're holding up pretty good for being almost 50 years old westcoin, you're holding up a heck of a lot better than that old worn out nickel! I'd guess the 1909 VDB was robbed from a collector and spent or it could be from a deceased relative spending something they didn't know was valuable.
