Quote:I agree about so many modern coins in the U.S. being, well, boring. I have felt for years the U.S. Mint could take a page or two (or three, or just borrow the book) from the Royal Canadian Mint on making interesting, attractive and appealing coins that would spark or revive interest in the hobby. the RCM has consistently put out extremely beautiful coins. Got to hand it to the Canadians, coins and hockey are their claim to fame. However the Sabres are still better than the Maple Leafs, IMHO.

We think every one is better than the Leafs.. The Force, sometimes we feel like giving up the collecting too, then something comes along we just go nuts about, we start on that series. I see you said, you have been selling and spending a few of you coins... I just hope someday, you wont regret it.

Well,, would hate to see a fellow brother/sister leave the hobby.. but if one feels like they have lost interest,,, the best would be just to let the hobby for now.
I agree with everyone else tho,,, you will see SOMETHING... and the bug will take hold,,, you will have somehting perk and spark, rekindle interest in coins again...
So, I mean, for now, maybe yes, just step aside... and just let it lay low... but I know you;ll be back :D... soooner or later lol

I think there is some fantastic advise in this thread. My opinion is that coin collecting is a wonderful and fulfilling hobby, but it can become an obsession. As with all things, moderation is important. I've been a collector for more than 40 years and I have put my collection away many times, only to enjoy rediscovering it. Lately, the greatest thrill for me is to see my Grandson light-up when he looks at the coins in my collection. I'm not fatalistic, but I realize that my collection will outlive me and it thrills me to know that it will go to my Grandson and not become some bundled sale in an estate auction.

Oh... one more thing. When it comes to current mintage, I totally agree. US coins are intolerably boring. As an eternal optimist, I truely believe the most beautiful circulating US coin is yet to be minted. I hope that I see the day that coin hits the street.

@Bama
yea ima with you... I would hope the US Mint, which, maybe I am biased, but I feel is one of the best in the world... starts some new series of 1 oz silver coins,,, such as with american wildlife.... kinda of like when they did those eagle gold and silver coins.
I do like the new finish they are talking about with that silver eagle west point set...

I am in agreement that the mint should do 1 oz silver coins with American wildlife on them. We have so many animals that would look great on a coin. Whales, bears, elk, alligators, moose, cranes, condors, etc.

I've gone through similar machinations. I've given up the hobby several times for 5 to 10 years each. Then for some reason I get the bug and I become fascinated and enthusiastic all over again.

Few weeks ago I noticed that coins take too much energy from me and I desided to sell the doubles and leave the collection as it is for a while. Well, I have found myself checking online coin auctions, asking coins in antique shops and thinking coin acquirings...

I started stamp collecting at age 15. Kind of gave it up at age 20 but then picked it up again at age 40 when I got some cheap stamps from my grandmother. Went at it strong for 10 years and then lost interest but still have my collection. I also started coin collecting at age 15. Since then I have gone for a couple of years of interest, then put it away for 10 years and then got going again for a bit. It keeps cycling off and on. I pulled it out last month to look at it after a 10 year lapse when I realized I should update my penny collection of Canada before a bunch of them get melted down. I went to a coin show with my dad who is 81 and still into it. I have a 30 year old son who has a mild interest and that gives us a topic of interest too. I am glad I never sold my collection over the years. I'm not in it for the money or as a business. I spend what I can afford and don't go crazy over it. These internet forums help keep up my interest too.

I am a good example of what TheForce is talking about. No one has seen me for awhile. I am back and have the fever again after a year. Other interest and things had come up and I just placed everything in the closet and closed my desk top, locked it and walked away until about a week ago. Now having fun with my collection again. Thanks Biged

I have several hobbies which come and go. Nothing holds my attention constantly, coins included. I sometimes go for months without even looking at my coins, but then I make a small purchase on ebay and that revives my interest again.

I'm going to take a different approach here. I think our mind set (our being the members of CCF) is going to be what you have heard. "Put it down for a while you'l be back" "Save some of it, you'll regret it" "just keep being a coin collector" (basicially)
My first thought was that your at the age where other things take precedence over saving shiny disks like getting your career on track and raising a family.
So my thought is sell your coins and be done with it. If you some day change your mind there will be more coins out there and plenty of time and probably more disposable income to play with.
