TheForce: Have you noticed that the new toonies have edge-lettering?! lol
Okay, but really, just go back in time and start a fresh series of older coins. Or rest and just take the time to read the book again! Whenever I go in a lull I start to read and it usually picks up again. Or create a fun set like animals or whatever comes to mind.

I agree with a couple others who have commented.

There's more than coins going on with you. You're suffering from depression. A sure sign of depression is losing interest in a long time hobby. Check to see if there are other influences going on in your life that's affecting your interests.

Take care.

I can relate with you, when you commented there are some disappointing elements to collecting. My son and I just started seriously collecting last July. We are having a lot of fun!! However, it's very disheartening to find out a popular new release is sold out on the 1st day, because flippers have bought 50-100 at a time. I'm on a limited income and cannot always afford the mark up. The obsession with the last penny roll, was an eye opener. I really had to stop
And think if I wanted to be part of a hobby, where a small group of people hog the popular coins all the time. It was sounding more like insanity and not something relaxing. I've often commented on this aspect to non collector friends. We end up having a good laugh! I hope I never get this over obsessed. Case in point long discussion of elusive 2013 Canuck penny. I must of missed something along the way. I like coins for their history and art work. I too hope my coins will maintain their value, when I pass them to my son. It's the best that can be hoped for. I agree mints have gotten greedy charging way over the metal value. Have they forgot hobbies are supposed to be fun, not break the bank. A hobby needs to be sustainable to be fun. I'm glad there are plenty of older coins to collect. It's still nice to add a new release at issues price occasionally. I totally understand flipping up to 10 coins to fund other coins. However 50-100 is discouraging to a new collector. I feel how can I compete, as I'll never be a master club member, to get advanced notice of new releases! So I can understand how someone can get turned off coin collecting. Rox

I agree about so many modern coins in the U.S. being, well, boring. I have felt for years the U.S. Mint could take a page or two (or three, or just borrow the book) from the Royal Canadian Mint on making interesting, attractive and appealing coins that would spark or revive interest in the hobby. Good luck with whatever yo decide to do!

Maybe change your focus a little? Collect world coins from your / spouse / kids birth years or something. Don't like the new stuff, don't buy it. Thousands of people are old car collectors because they think new cars are ugly.

My piece of this hobby is buying silver under spot and sorting pennies, dimes and quarters from the coin machine at my bank.

Nooo! Don't sell it! Or, sell it to me! I'll give you $30.00 for it all. I'll even let you pay the shipping.

the RCM has consistently put out extremely beautiful coins. Got to hand it to the Canadians, coins and hockey are their claim to fame. However the Sabres are still better than the Maple Leafs, IMHO.

We think every one is better than the Leafs..

The Force, sometimes we feel like giving up the collecting too, then something comes along we just go nuts about, we start on that series.
I see you said, you have been selling and spending a few of you coins... I just hope someday, you wont regret it.

Well,, would hate to see a fellow brother/sister leave the hobby.. but if one feels like they have lost interest,,, the best would be just to let the hobby for now.

I agree with everyone else tho,,, you will see SOMETHING... and the bug will take hold,,, you will have somehting perk and spark, rekindle interest in coins again...

So, I mean, for now, maybe yes, just step aside... and just let it lay low... but I know you;ll be back :D... soooner or later lol

I think there is some fantastic advise in this thread. My opinion is that coin collecting is a wonderful and fulfilling hobby, but it can become an obsession. As with all things, moderation is important. I've been a collector for more than 40 years and I have put my collection away many times, only to enjoy rediscovering it. Lately, the greatest thrill for me is to see my Grandson light-up when he looks at the coins in my collection. I'm not fatalistic, but I realize that my collection will outlive me and it thrills me to know that it will go to my Grandson and not become some bundled sale in an estate auction.

Oh... one more thing. When it comes to current mintage, I totally agree. US coins are intolerably boring. As an eternal optimist, I truely believe the most beautiful circulating US coin is yet to be minted. I hope that I see the day that coin hits the street.

@Bama

yea ima with you... I would hope the US Mint, which, maybe I am biased, but I feel is one of the best in the world... starts some new series of 1 oz silver coins,,, such as with american wildlife.... kinda of like when they did those eagle gold and silver coins.

I do like the new finish they are talking about with that silver eagle west point set...

I am in agreement that the mint should do 1 oz silver coins with American wildlife on them. We have so many animals that would look great on a coin. Whales, bears, elk, alligators, moose, cranes, condors, etc.

I've gone through similar machinations. I've given up the hobby several times for 5 to 10 years each. Then for some reason I get the bug and I become fascinated and enthusiastic all over again.
