Have you got a slabbed counterfeit? I would love to see it.

I've been trying to locate it and have't been able to, but somewhere I have image of a PCGS slab with an 1804 large cent in it that was actually an altered date made from an 1803 S-261 I also know of a case of a PCGS slab that made a sensation at an ANA convention awhile back because it had a new obv and rev die for I believe it was 1825. Eventually it was realized that the coin was actually a known contemporary counterfeit. I'm sure there are others. Fakes in PCGS slabs are rare, but they do exist.

PCGS slabbed contemporary counterfeits are indeed rare.

I am actually hunting for a contemporary counterfeit Mexican 8 Reales in a slab - so I know I may have a longer search than for any old counterfeit.

I now own or know the whereabouts of a contemporary counterfeit Mexican 8 Reales in every other type of slab that I know of.

PCGS is the only TPG that to my knowledge has NOT encapsulated a contemporary counterfeit 8R.

Anyone on the forum who knows of one or hears of one - I would appreciate hearing about it. Photos will do but I would really love to own one.

I don't know much about counterfeit coins, so this has been a really informative thread.

@epikur, When examining the coin in hand, did the strike on the reverse or the weight seem "off" before you used magnification and a scale?

Is this a key date? I don't know the series, but looking at numismedia fmv, it doesn't seem so.

How common are counterfeit coins for non-key dates?

I bought it together with another seated liberty half, so it was when I handled the two coins I noticed it as the fake seemed slightly lighter then the other. That made me bring out the scale.

After that, I did notice the fat rim and went looking at slabbed halfs online.

After that, CCF

Epikur, keep us posted. I bought my Civil War IHC from coinman_2000 and while it looks different from my other IHC, friend Google suggested this was because cents were made of different material during the war and thus were thicker. It's far too late for recourse if mine turns out to be a counterfeit (although I showed pics of it here and nobody suggested it was of uncertain provenance), but now I'm concerned.

arkmanxx You ask -

Unfortunately they are VERY common.

You must remember when dealing with forgers there are two primary ways of passing off forgeries for profit. One is into circulation at face value or bullion value. The second is Numismatic forgery intended to fool collectors.

The first type in general are collectible (provided they are legal to own). The second group poses the threat to all of us and our investments (if you even consider coins to be an investment).

Copies of common coins are OFTEN made to circulate . These counterfeits copy VERY common coins. Why ? Because forgers target the coins you never look at. Who looks at a fine grade 1965 Washington quarter? Or for that matter any worn quarters you get in change. That is a current favorite of forgeres here in the US. IN Ecuador it is the Susan B Anthony and Sacagawea US dollars because they circulate there.

Numismatic forgers on the other hand sell anything that will fool their target audience and make a profit. So quality ranges from VERY BAD - tourist knock offs to VERY good high end Numismatic forgeries.

Before buying anything KNOW what it is you are buying.

The half dollar that started this thread is NOT REALLY that hard to spot once you know what to look for. The hard ones are the kind that you keep on your desk for days and keep reviewing over and over looking for that something that gives you an upset feeling but not even knowing what it is,

Thank you as always for another class in detecting counterfeits. I learn more each time you join a thread.

This has been a most informative thread and thank you to all the knowledgable participants - I
was planning of taking advanced grading at the Summer Session at the ANA this year, but now, I
feel I should take Counterfeit Detection. I really have a lot to learn !!

What caught my eye to this Thread, was the date, 1856-O. I picked up a Type Coin of that date
from a very highly respected dealer at the ANA last Summer. It's in a PCGS AU 55 holder - so I
feel (now) somewhat secure in the purchase.

I'll edit this with the image - once I can figure out how to access my images on Photobucket,
now that they improved their site, I can't locate quite a few coins I had on my "General Coins" heading.

Frustrating !

I bought the coin on a whim, I knew the dealer quite well and I spotted two very rare Seated half dollars in his case...
neither of which I could have afforded... but while drooling over the unobtainable,I spotted the 1856-O and loved the color
and originality of the coin... so I had to have it !

You should be fine - he is a high volume seller - good reputation but anyone posting that many can hit a clinker now and then.
