@Soul, What is the meaning of "Farewell to the Penny"? if they keep making Penny in the penny each year in the future.

Yes and I remember multiple Rolling Stones, The Who and Kiss Farewell tours. Just because something is gone doesn't mean it cant be resurrected or celebrated multiple times. The Susan B. Anthony dollar comes to mind. The coin minted from 1979 to 1981, and again in 1999. Take Australia for an example. They got rid of the penny in 1992. The one cent coin was produced as proof in 2006 and 2010 as part of mint sets. So is this a real farewell to the penny? No, we will see another penny in the future guaranteed, just not in circulation form. But then you never know. If the wrong political party comes into power there could be another penny.

Quote: what's to stop the mint from still making pennies each year and distributing them On Mar. 29, 2012, the following was in a statement from the mint: Quote:the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies as of fall 2012. That wording is pretty clear.

of course they can make something in future to memory the Penny. But not each year like the 50 cents roll.

Actually by the amount of NCLT junk the mint churns out each year, they seem to be able to do what ever they feel like. The cent will be back in one form or another in a collector version , watch! May take awhile but can you envision this in a 6 coin 3 metallic set... the 100th anniversary of the demise of the Large cent and the introduction of the small cent 2020 in the appropriate sizes gold silver and bronze. BTW OT the sale of roll #20000.............total $6k Loonacy!! LOL LOL

Quote: of course they can make something in future to memory the Penny. But not each year like the 50 cents roll. Technically they can. It might not look like the penny we have today but they could make a special edition penny roll every year forever. There is nothing to stop them from making specimen coin rolls also. They would not be for distribution but after seeing the current farewell to the penny rolls getting $30+ on ebay I'm sure the Mint is wishing they had priced the rolls at $20. New underestimate the Mints Greed and thrust for profits.

Still cant comprehend what would drive someone to spend $6600 on a ROLL of 2012 pennies with a fancy serial. I mean, for that amount, I would buy gold bullion...or perhaps 1921 5c. But who knows, maybe this investment of $6600 will pay off in the future and be worth $12000....although I just CANNOT see that roll being worth more than a couple hundred bucks...

I just assumed the penny will continue to be produced for special sets. No question we will see it again, and soon. Perhaps not in the same form. Is the RCM not the government? SO they can do what ever they want...technically, right?

The last penny actually produced was probably in some NCLT set. That doesn't seem to be an issue with respect to the rolls.

Then why don't we see the penny in the current 2013 sets out there?
This penny rolls go crazy, cause people and most of us think it is the last million penny from the Mint.
If people know every year after 2012-2013, there will be some forms of penny release (penny in the set, special roll of penny like 50 cents roll). I don't think this special wrap of 2012 penny rolls will go crazy like at this moment.

Just being devils advocate but the mint already went back on their statement "the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer distribute pennies as of fall 2012." These rolls came out in February. So if they could do it for this release, they could continue to do it in the future. Wording is everything. Is there a statement from the mint that they'll never produce another penny again? Or just that they won't be distributed for circulation again? Big difference.

Time will tell. Let's see.
Everything is prediction now. There is no poor people if everyone know what are the winning numbers for next lottery jackpot.

They didn't distribute them like normal, they sold them as collector items.
