I never thought about the common element of the outer ring. That's an excellent point!

I think the subject matter of a lot of the coins has a lot to do with it as well. It seems the favorites among the State Quarters were the ones that features natural scenes and settings like Colorado and Oregon.

The ATB Quarters all feature national or state landmarks, but the vast majority of them so far seem to feature natural landmarks like the Grand Canyon, Hawaii Volcanoes, White Mountain, Etc... which seem to have more eye and collection appeal.

And I also agree that the standard circular border making the location, state, and date marks uniform on each coin adds to the appeal. I look forward to collecting the entire series, much more-so than I did with the State Quarters.

I definitely like the ATB Quarters better than the 50 states.

I think the main thing is the ATB Quarters have much more going on in the pictures, almost 3 D like and they all have a uniform border around the picture throughout the series.

For all the reasons you state, they are indeed awesome. And I love the designs as they show on the 5 oz pucks too.

You say that now because the released coins are of famous parks with iconic scenes. Just wait for quarters with Tallgrass (KS), Homestead (NE), Effigy Mounds (IA) and other lesser known/less picturesque sites in the years to come. It really remains to be seen how much ingenuity mint designers will come up with original art for some of these locations. If they aren't given the artwork by the respective park superintendents first. As an instance of this, the Glacier coin was a still image taken from a Park Service travelogue film commissioned in the 1920's!

I also like them a lot. I casually collected coins as a kid, and just got back into coin collecting a few months ago when I saw the ATBs.

I've been able to get all of the 2010 & 2011 and a couple of 2012 only because I have my cafeteria lady at work save them for me. All we get is P-mint though...

Completely agree that the ATBs are quite the step up from the state designs. I especially love the uniform outer-ring reverse on each one.

So do I. The series has a more unified feel because of it.
