I have bought and sold many coins on craigslist. Like others have said, most coins are way over priced, people buy things on an impulse for way to much, and then put it on craigslist for a profit or to get their inflated buying price back. But if you are vigilant there are a lot of good deals. I have never gotten ripped off on craigslist, the only bad experiences I have had is when people agree on a price and then back out or once agreed to meet and then never show up. I would much rather buy on craigslist than ebay.

I've just started looking for coins on Craigslist and it seems like the vast majority of what I find are "we want to buy your gold/silver" or people selling ASEs, junk silver, or gold.
The ONE time I've pursued a guy with Mercury's he acted like it was the end of the world that I wanted to actually look at the dates and not buy in lot's of 200. His posting said he'd sell his 3000 Mercs in 200 piece lots for $3.00 each. I jumped right on it and told him I'd be interested in all of them at $3.00 per 200. He got pretty offended and corrected me a few times saying, 'No, lots of $200 for $3.00 per dime.' I really wanted to give him a few pointers on grammar but let it slide. Instead I told him I was interested in starting a Merc collection and if he knew any of the dates. He responded back with, 'If you want to look at the dates they will be much more expensive.' I get that he was probably just trying to sell silver but I was pretty surprised at his attitude. I told him to just forget it and moved on with life. I'll keep looking and hoping but we'll see.

I thought I would take a look at Craig's List. I just saw like 20 wheat pennies and a few Buffalo nickels for $10, nothing special. I also saw 20 Buffalo nickels in a Whitman folder for $1000. I would hope there was a higher grade 1913S Type II in there for that price.

I have bought from Craig's list w/ no problems. It's also easier to talk haggle on the price in person.

I posted an ad for buying silver at 70% melt value and also for any foreign coins in bulk (said I would quote a price based on the coins and country of origin). I had a lot of luck actually, until I ran out of money to play with for a few months then never got back into it. Picked up a huge stash of Soviet Union roubles from 1977-1980 commemorating the 1980 Moscow XXII Olympics. I paid $40.00 for the bag, kept half and put most of the rest up for sale. Made over $200.00 on the sales. By the way, I find it a bit concerning that 4 people apparently woke up without kidneys due to Craigslist posts. :)

I have had great transactions. Got some silverware for a great price. two rolls of halves for less than spot a 15 ounce bar for 250$ when silver was over 30 an ounce

I sell on Craigslist every now and again. I have strict rules about meeting in public places Cash only transactions and I require a copy of the buyers driving license. I put all this in my post and so far I have had no issues. though every time I do post on craigslist I get bombarded with spam for a month.

I bought my first coin on Craigslist. IMO, there are less scammers than there used to be on it. I believe they hide the email addresses of both parties now. You do have to be careful and meet in public places but you can glean a lot from the initial communication with the buyer or seller. There are a lot of people who overvalue their stuff and refuse to even search ebay completed auctions but that is the same anywhere. Once in a while you find a person right place, right time and get a deal.

I buy all the time on CL and have gotten some great deals...as well as meeting people who have brought me coins since our first transaction. A couple of things that I do that I highly recommend: 1. Set up a separate email address and use it only for CL conversation. Make the email monicker completely anonymous and NEVER give or use your address. I rarely even use my real name until I have done business with a seller and may want to do again....then I tell them! 2. I only meet in public places like a fire station. 3. Get the name and address of the person you are buying from and keep it with a printed copy of the CL ad (in case you find out the coins are stolen). 4. Stay off CL in NC....there are no coins here!! :)

I've made half-hearted attempts at placing "foreign coins wanted and for sale" ads on the local list. Most of the responses were either nonsensical (sorry, if you can't complete a sentence I'm going to look elsewhere), or too far away to be worth it. I did sell some bulk foreign duplicates- in that one case skipping the ebay and postage fees was worth it... I'll look now and then and may try again, but I wouldn't expect great things. There's one well-established (and highly reputable I might add) local coin shop that gets most people's business here- I doubt I can (or want to) carve off some of their business... cheers, tbg

Not Craigslist, but on Kijiji, some local guy was selling his truck, went for a test drive with two blokes, and his body was discovered some days later. Sad. These two websites are alright, but you really need to be vigilant and meet your buyers in a public area with obvious cameras.

I cant believe I actually forgot to mention this in my first post on page 1, I feel bad actually, as It was probably my best Craigslist experience.. But it happened a while ago so sue me, lol, my memory's not what it used to be and life's busy. And sorry, this post many be a bit long.. Anyways, like I origionally said, I have bought and sold coins off of Craigslist many times, more than 10 at least. And most purchases have been great deals. But I forgot to mention one experience that was unbelievable, proof that extremely nice people still do exist out there and sometimes you have to risk trusting people, a little at least. So there was an add up from a town maybe an hour from me.. It was a man with a quite extensive collection. He didn't list is coins in his add, but said to email him and he would send a list... So I emailed him (with the email I use only for Craigslist) and request a list of the coins. I got an email back pretty quick, a day or two but it had attancments that my phone wouldnt allow me to open... I figured it was just another scam and pretty much forgot about it. Well a week or two passed and I get another email from him, he was apoligizing saying that a few people that had also requested the list had had gotten a virus on there computer when they opened the attachments, and that he wanted to make it right and would send everyone that requested the list some free coins and asked what I collected... So I was definitely a bit suspicious but we wrote back and forth a few times and it ended up that he was a really nice man and unfortionitly having some very serious health issues and needed money for a surgery.. I believe his literal words were that he didn't think he would live past this past Christmas (this happened late last summer), honestly it seemed he had given up hope the way he was talking and he really lost interest in selling his coins, I asked for the list a few more times and he always said he didn't need to sell them anymore because it wouldn't matter but he'd give everyone who asked for the list some ... It was really sad... But after talking to him a few times I figured I would take the risk and give him my address after telling him I collect (mainly) Morgan's and silver dollars... And low and behold less than a week later I got a 1884 Morgan and a 1922 Peace dollar (both AU) in the mail! I couldn't believe it!! I already had both in MS so they got traded in towards two new MS Morgan's I didn't have yet. I emailed him again thanking him over and over! He wrote back one time saying your welcome and that was the last I heard from him... I tried emailing a few times last fall just to see if he was ok and say happy thanksgiving, but got no response Anyways, I think of this man every once and a while still and It makes me feel great knowing that there are still people out there with hearts of gold.. So again, I'd have to say cruising Craigslist is definitely worth the few minutes it takes. And as long as our smart about meeting people you have little to worry about!

I've sold a lot of items (not coins) on CL, when I do I give really great deals so the stuff is gone quick. Everybody I've dealt with was a very nice person.
I always look for coins but prices are either retail or much higher. I'm not going to deal with CL unless I'm getting a very good price, to much hassle.

52Raymo- Thankfully I couldn't open the attachment... So obviously I didnt get any virus's. I told him I couldnt open it but he said he felt bad for sending it, asked what I collected, and sent 2 dollars anyways.
*edit* I should mention I didn't even know the file contained a virus. He emailed me saying that other people he sent the list to informed him there was a virus, and wanted to know what I collected as he was sending everyone he sent the list to roughly $100 in coins. And he did.
