More than a few out there.....I have five. Nobody could know for sure but at least a hundred, probably more since I have seen this Cud numerous other times.

Although it looks like it might be a Cud,I'm not 100% sure from those pictures. There is damage on the reverse opposite the spot on the obverse, so it may be some sort of PMD. Only better pictures will show for sure.

It might be solder. The reverse rim doesn't look right? The rim should be weak as the OP's coin shows.

Zimmy --- He asked about how many more for this particular die, not all together, lol of course there would be more than a few Cuds in total.

This is a well-known Cud (marginal die break) and, as Zimmy said, there is a faint floating die clash that was produced when the obverse die struck the detached die fragment.

I appreciate the information. It looks as though everyone is agreeing that this is a Cud so I am definitely going to hang on to this one as its my first error coin ever found.

I'm on the same page with COOP. Not having close up pics it looks like it could be PMD to me. The Cud isn't the typical shape of a Cud where it's thicker on the rim and the reverse looks funny.

I will try to take closer picks. If its just solder its not worth hanging on to ha

I'm glad I am on Mike Diamond's page and I would hope than the OP is on that page too. Wouldn't you think that the two technical responses above would indicate that those responders knew a little about what they were talking about?

Chzman.....my response was for that particular die not for Cuds in general which I have hundreds. I have 5 just like his and there would be a lot more out there, just like his.

KisNap - if Mike Diamond says that you have a Cud, believe its a Cud! Congrats, its a really cool find for your first one, I never find those, I buy them. Zimmy...I agree, there are so many more out there, your post was right after mine so I mistakenly assumed that you were correcting me, my bad sorry, I have a bit of a defensive personality.

Here are a few of my 1979 nickel Cuds like the one the OP posted. It's listed in the Cud Book as JNC-79-1. Notice the die damage above the Cud on the close up photo. That's the damage explained earlier in this discussion and makes this a more desirable piece.

If Mr. Diamond said it is a Cud, it is 99.9% a Cud. He is one of the best at determining errors, so you should hang on to it.

Thanks for the pictures of your Cud's Zimmy. It was just difficult for me to tell with the OP's photos what was going on. But comparing it to your coins, it's the same thing. Nice find! Dave
